Does anyone travel with these or similar? Amazon has a “light my fire” Swedish brand of plastic sporks that looks both usable and TSA acceptable.
Oooh, I love this. I like picking up a bite here and there from a grocery store or food truck, then finding a park or somewhere outside to eat, so this would be helpful. Yet another item in my cart now…. 😊
Those are great!

A small picnic pouch has come in handy on lots of trips/tours. I used to include the LMF spork, but it's a bit long to fit in the silicone Stasher pouch I use now.

I currently use this set:

They nest together, can be used separately, and attach end to end to reach into deeper containers.
My kit also includes a cloth napkin and a flat bottle opener.
I have a spork I got at Eddie Bauer years ago. I never travel without it.
all the time - take it on my travels, walking in the countryside, and every day to work to eat my lunch 🍽️
I remember every backpacker on the trail having a Swedish spork. Me? I had to be different and got myself a German army folding spoon & fork. I cannot recall whether it was Tesco Express or Sainsbury Local but when getting prepared foods to pack a lunch, they'd have Swedish sporks available.
LoL auto correct wanted to correct "spork" to "sport".
I have a plastic collapsible spork I bought many moons ago, it's somehow survived being crushed in my bag even though it's not the sturdiest creature. I can't find any modern equivalent, but this one at REI caught my eye should mine bite the dust eventually (it doesn't have the serrated edge like the Light My Fire ones): https://www.rei.com/product/247536/humangear-gobites-spin-collapsible-spork
Light My Fire sporks have been traveling with me for years. I have both the regular version and the small versions.
I prefer LMF because they have the serrated edge that can be used as a basic knife. Most others don't have this.
If you stick with the plastic versions, you won't have problem at airport security if you're doing carry on only.
I’ve got one that came with a pre packed meal from a big grocery store in Amsterdam years ago.
It’s really sturdy and I always bring it on a trip.
Handy for eating in a hotel room.
I take two on each trip. One lives in my purse for on-the-go use; the other stays in my bag of Zip Lock bags. I've had one or two (not necessarily the Light My Fire brand) snap in half, so I'm leery of starting a trip with just one.
Thank you everyone, especially Frank II. I have a plastic ware kit. But, it’s bulky. I have used disposable plastic utensils. I like the idea of a single utensil that is TSA acceptable. I like the serrated edge. I also like to “picnic” a bit when traveling. Not every meal can be a blow-out gastronomic experience. Eating in parks, hotels, in transit is sometimes nice, even desirable.
The humangear GoBites brand looks good, also. Outer Fork tines have a bit of a scandi grind edge on them for cutting. I wonder which cuts better - serrated edge on LMF or scandi edge on GoBites? The LMF may be more rigid. The GoBites flexes to resist snapping into two pieces.
I’m leaning toward the LMF brand. The serrated knife edge looks more effective.
Having used both kinds, I think they are similar in strength/flexibility/rigidity.
A review I just saw reminded me that the serated edge isn't always comfortable for eating, and the edge on the GoBites does cut softish stuff.
I just watched some spork videos. There is another one called UCO Switch which includes a plastic knife. More to wash though.
Good Points LizinPA.
I saw these at Eddie Bauer several years ago but didn’t buy one.
My cheap version is just keeping the wooden spoon & fork from the airplane meal for that trip. Or, we received free disposable silverware during our Christmas Markets trip when we picked up packaged salads in the grocery store in Salzburg.
Love mine! I keep it in my purse. I got it at REI. The first one that I got 20 years ago just broke, so I got a new one.
20 years! Longer than a car. Good investment. The GoBites one by humangear on Amazon looks like the forerunner now.
I just ordered the LMF spork initially mentioned. I’ve been busy booking lodging for a trip, so I figured I’d better get it while it was on my mind. I barely even considered other options. I’ll report back whether or not I like it. I also ordered the silicone bottle lid covers someone mentioned on the forum too. Some days I’m easily influenced.
I’ve had my LMF spork for 11 years. $5.82 for a set of 2, Amazon. I only carry one and use it most but not all trips and they’ve held up fine. Sporks forever!
KRS,
Nothing wrong with LMF. Enjoy.
While I like the GoBites Spork, I looked online at my local WalMart. There are UCO sporks there that are much less expensive. $5 or so for 2. The UCO ones are not as slick as the GoBites. But for the price, are worth a trip over to the local Walmart. Next challenge is what aisle? Camping section or lunchbox aisle?
Sunbaked....if you go to the Walmart website and put in your local store, it will tell you which aisle to find the sporks.
Thanks Frank.
I had a few of the Eddie Bauer sporks. One did break in half.
Sun, one of my friends wrote a whimsical essay about the spork in her Christmas letter, that don't we wish all problems in life had a simple solution like a spork.??
In that alternative reality where this forum is actually a holiday potluck where we all get together, I'll bring her and spork collection along!!
Hey Doric! Happy New Year!
I like the “new” style of sporks compared to the original bowl shaped spoon with a few prongs cut into the rim. I hated those. These double-ended fork/spoon combo tools seem much more functional.
I really like your idea of a RS forum potluck. A dream, yes. But, a fun thought. Swap out gear we no longer use as white elephant gifts.
Frank II, aisle L22 it is at Walmart. The aisle number was in small print, but I found it!
I have the UCO plastic spork. I also purchased the kid size because the spoon side feels too wide for my mouth. The kid size doesn't have the serrated edge.
I also have their 4-piece mess kit. I see now that they have a mess kit that locks closed. It has a two-piece utensil with a knife in the handle of the spoon that fits in a sheath in the handle of the fork.
I find the mess kit handy for heating up leftovers in the microwave at the hotel.
I bought the spork at my local hardware store in the camping section. I got the mess kit and kid spork on Amazon.
For transporting food, I'd get the locking version.
If you're looking for plates and bowls to take with you, check out Fozzils. I used to travel with the plate and bowl but never used them enough. When I did, they worked very well.
Now I travel with these Ikea chopping boards. They are super thin. I found them too big so I cut them in half. They work great as both a chopping board and a make-shift plate. I got mine from the Ikea in Vienna.
I bought the UCO Switch sporks mentioned upthread.
My opinion is simple....they will be replacing the "Light My Fire" sporks I've been traveling with for years.
The Uco Switch are more like real utensils especially using the "knife."
There is also a non-knife version of UCO that is one piece.
I ended up ordering the LMF sporks based on this thread. I think I'm going to like this addition to my travel items. They are tiny so won't be a bother to throw into my purse at all and will make impromptu picnics much easier. Thanks for the idea!
Rather than pack yet another item, I just keep my utensil packet from the flight over, or pick up a disposable fork or spoon from a restaurant or coffee shop on my way. That way I can toss if no longer needed. This is after packing a reusable one for several years, plus some type of cup, etc. We stay often enough in a place with a kitchenette, so have what we need, and other places we just never really needed something very often.
