Shaving cream

What do men usually do about shaving cream? It doesn't look like Rick carries any. Is anyone carrying an electric travel razor?

Are you asking because you can't take your normal shaving cream in your carry on on the flight? Just pick up a solid cake/bar of shaving soap, should be available most places that carry shaving equipment, travel stores, online, etc.

I just buy a travel size can of shaving cream at my local pharmacy or supermarket. Usually lasts about five weeks.

The Art of Shaving: this company makes 3 oz tubes and the stuff is very high quality and not cheap. I like the unscented best. They have stores in many cities and are on Amazon. I carry a trimmer for the goatee and mustache. I otherwise don't get along with electric razors, too much rash. There are also little papers which you wet and then they turn into shaving lather, sort of. I tried them, won't again.

My husband does the same.

I use a battery operated travel shaver. Isn't as good as my regular shaver but who cares?

Op, listen, I'm going to let you in on a secret that very few men know about. I'm going to say two words that will change your life. Y'ready? Ok, here they are:

Shaving oil.

Shaving oil is a godsend if you want to shave while you're traveling. It comes in a little bitty bottle and you only use a few drops for a PERFECT shave. Here's the nb on it, 'tho: you'll want to use a single-blade disposable razor. Double-blades will clog, but a single-blade will shed the gunk just fine. Also, it's great for your skin and smells really nice. You can find it on Amazon for super-cheap. I take shaving oil with me where ever I go and I've got a beard that makes #2 grit sandpaper feel like silk -- never had a better shave! Come out lookin' smooth and suave without a trace of razor burn or stubble.

So there ya go, OP, consider your life changed!

My husband uses "conditioner" as shaving cream. It's easy to bring a small one you get in hotels. Takes up less space than a can of shaving cream. We take carry-on only so anything to par down is important.

Hand soap works fine and I shave my beard and my head.

+1 on shave oil. I'm currently using Somerset's but you can try Shave Secret available at Walmart which is pretty good but clogs a little more with my Mach 3 razor. You can easily get rid of any clogging with a little soap applied to the blade. I rarely get any clogging with the Somerset's.

If you prefer cream I really like Kiss My Face which you can find at a lot of green grocers like Whole Foods. It comes in a travel size.

What jkc said. At home or on the road I use bar soap for washing, shaving, and shampoo. It just works.

Bar soap works, and you can still buy those little round cakes for use in brushing mugs. There's nothing special in shaving cream but soap, perfume, and lubricants. An old Army trick is to use hand lotion (don't need water, just rub it in when finished) or even sunscreen in a pinch.

Or you can buy local when you get there.

I use the travel size shaving cream (these days, sold at any drugstore).

If what you brought runs out, they sell shaving cream at every European drugstore, as well. However, you have to put the regular size cans of shaving cream in checked luggage, so if you're using carry-on only, you can't take it home with you. If you're checking luggage on the way over, on the other hand, you can bring a regular size can with you.

I use an electric shaver at home, but when traveling I use a light, plastic-handled razor (similar to a disposable but with replaceable blades) and shave in the shower using whatever soap is at hand. I don't have a heavy, tough beard, so shaving's not too much of a chore, anyway.

Shaving cream is unnecessary - all you need is a a wet beard and a sharp razor

An additional vote for "shaving oil". I use exactly 4 drops per shave, and it works great, gives a close shave. The bottle is tiny, like one of those old little bottles of "white out" used in covering up typing mistakes. About the size of a nickel round, then maybe 1.5 inches tall. Tiny, about $3.50 at WalMart or online, and a little bottle lasts forever, almost.

Sheesh, I am so behind and learning about great products. Shampoo or even bar soap stocked in hotel rooms gets the job done. I used to pack a travel size canister of shaving cream, but no más.

I either use the soap provided by the hotel or nothing. Shaves well either way.

Never liked electric. Doesn't cut close enough for me without cutting my skin. At least the ones I have used.

You can now buy any toiletries in Europe that we have in North America.

On my first visit 46 years ago, the Bavarian ladies didn't shave their legs or their under arms. And deodorant was also a rarity. Oh how the world's changed since then.

sea,

I just pack my regular electric razor along on travels, and that works well (packed in my checked luggage). The charger is dual voltage so it's not a problem to charge it in Europe. I also carry a backup blade razor in my carry-on along with a small bottle of Somerset's Shaving Oil. If I have a long layover on the way to my final destination, I use the backup kit to freshen up.

I bring enough shaving creme to last a trip, be it two weeks or two months, better than using soap. I don't like the shaving creme brands I've seen in Germany. I don't use an electric shaver.

I use one of these: Panasonic Battery Shaver. It gave me a great shave once I let my beard get used to it.

I also use Somerset's Shaving Oil--Heavy Beard Formula as a pre-shave because I have a thick stubble. Been using it for over 15 years. I also carry a razor in case I decide to skip a day of shaving. (The battery shaver can't handle two days of growth by itself.)

I recently got one of these smaller Panasonic Battery Shavers. I want to see if it can replace it's bigger cousin.

My husband likes to use the shaving cream sheets found at online travel sites and i believe this last time I found them on Amazon.

I've never heard of shaving oil and never thought of using a bar of shaving soap. In the past, I've not carried anything and just picked up shaving cream and a razor at my destination. Today is a good time to try just using my bar of Ivory soap in the shower. Thanks everyone.

Another vote for Shaving Oil

I have tried electric razor (battery and regular), and taking shaving cream but once you try using shaving oil you will never go back!
There are several brands with the best (IMHO) is either Somerset or Pacific Shaving Co., these both come in tiny bottles that are easy on the liquids bag and a small bottle will last you over a month of daily shaving. Now here's the best part, you will get a much better shave with the oil than with regular foam or soap, in fact this is what I use at home on a daily basis. I would recommend you use a Gillett Mach 3 blade because the blades are far enough apart that they don't clog up.

Trust me on this, give this a try on your next trip and see if this isn't the easiest way to shave while traveling!

When I do shave I use C.O. Bigelow Premium Shave Cream. You can get it at Bath & Body Works.

For years I carried my 1 lb rechargeable shaver, until it got to be close to 10% of my load. Since I already had a mustache, which cut down on the shaving, I started carrying a disposable razor for the rest. Now that I am retired and don't have to go to work in the morning, I often forget to shave, so now I have a beard full time, but I still need a disposable razor for the edges.

After I quit the electric shaver, I found that regular hand soap works for shaving. Now a carry a bar of ivory soap. It works for all things, showering, shaving, and laundry.

I've tried to solve this conundrum many different ways. I am a big -1 for shaving oil (wouldn't use it if you gave it to me free, doesn't work at all-ugh) and also electric razors. I have used conditioner, hotel soap etc. My current solution, I buy a bar of shampoo soap and cut it up into small pieces (1/4 of a bar lasts over a month.) It has more oils and fats than regular soap so (IMHO) makes shaving easier. I can also use it as shampoo if the hotel does not have freebies (and in many parts of the world where I travel they do not.) A full size bar, over 5 oz is less than $9 and their travel size is less than $3. The company I buy from (Chagrin Valley) sells shaving soap, but the shampoo bars work well for me although their shaving bars are good also. But that's my solution and the best advice is likely: try all sorts of different solutions and see what works for you.

It's a special case, but when we went to China and to St. Petersburg, the tap water is not recommended for shaving, due to danger of infection, so I switched to an electric (with an alcohol-y conditioner before) for those two trips. It should be noted that some men have particularly tough beards - not me. Perhaps Rick is more interested in fashion?

One more vote for shaving oil. A few years back, tried it at home before a trip. Since then, have been using it at home and on the road.

I haven't been able to find shaving oil locally, so I'm ordering some today. Shaving with just soap seemed to work fine, but the nicks stinged more than with shaving cream, and the razor handle was slippery. Not big problems, though.

The TSA web site says you are allowed up to 3.4 (100 ml.) in your carry on baggage and NONE in your checked baggage. My simple solution is to buy shaving cream etc. when I arrive and leave the left over in my hotel room at the end of the trip. Using plain soap as a substitute last for a couple days and then the skin on your face will tell you that shaving cream has more than just soap in it.

Shout out to those that suggested shaving oil! I am officially converted!

I tried the oil, but it just didn't work well. In my last try, I used 10 drops and it still wasn't very smooth. I've done much better with plain soap or conditioner.

We leave home with just bar soap and pick up a can of shaving gel in the first few days of our trip.

It's only a few euros and easy to find in supermarkets or drugstores. We leave it behind at the end of the trip but we do bring along a spare zip lock to pack it in for our moves between destinations.

Just a side note on Irv's comment above that TSA says NO liquids in checked baggage -- I believe it's more correct that there are no LIMITS on liquids/gels in checked baggage. (Assuming they are not prohibited items like gasoline)

The keys to a good shave with oil are only a few drops of oil, and keeping the areas moist with water before and during a shave. Should the areas dry up during a shave, splash on more water, but not more oil. That tiny bottle can last a long time.

Perhaps, but it didn't work for me at all. Tried 2 different brands on 2 trips. So those bottles will last a very long time because I'll never use it again.

Shaving oil, for sure. We used to buy it online, but now I make it up for my husband, and that's all he uses at home, too. He much prefers it to the alternatives.

I make it with sweet almond oil, a titch of glycerine, plus a titch of a nice-smelling essential oil (sandal wood). For travelling (carry-on-friendly), he fills an old eye or ear drops bottle (re-labelled!). 15 mL, I think. It lasts a 3-week trip of daily shaving.

Cheers,
Vivian

Attention those with very sensitive skin: The various suggestions generously shared to this point may work for many people, but not for me. I'm cursed with extremely sensitive skin on my face, and it has taken me years to discover a set of products that allow me to give myself a close shave without cutting myself multiple times or ending up with painful razor burn. My preferred shaving gel is not available in a TSA permitted size, and the gel which is canned under pressure loses its full effect if it's transferred to another smaller container and not used immediately. I've finally found a reasonable substitute. Neutrogena Men has recently introduced a Sensitive Skin Shave Cream. I can only find it in a 5.1 ounce/150 ml container, but it can be squeezed into smaller TSA approved size containers without losing any of its useful properties. This, combined with my usual Schick Hydro 5 razor and Lab Series Razor Burn Relief Ultra fragrance free after shave lotion (in a 3.4 ounce/100 ml plastic bottle) allows me to travel without checked luggage and not carve up my face while away from home.

Marc, in the UK, and possibly in other countries, I've found 1 oz/28g containers of Nivea Men Sensitive Shaving Gel.

You may also want to check out the shaving page at Minimus.biz to see if they have anything that may work for you.
