Scott e Vest for Women

I hate carrying a purse when traveling. I usually use a crossbody, but the strap always ends up hurting my neck--even when I have very little inside it. I have a genetic disorder that causes my tissues to be extra sensitive. Therefore, I am looking at the Scott e Vest website.

My questions are for anyone who has a vest, jacket, or zip up (not quarter zip--I need something that is a full zip) from Scott e Vest. I am not interested in the cardigan styles or pants.

Do you like the vest/jacket? Any drawbacks you have found? Is the material cool? I am having trouble thinking of adding a layer to my wardrobe. I have to wear sun-protective long sleeve shirts with high collars. I'm wondering about the vests being too hot. A jacket or vest won't be an issue when we travel to cooler locations, but we often travel to Europe in the summer when it is warm. Also, do you find that you forget which pocket you put something into?

They seem like a great alternative to carrying a purse, but I don't want to overheat! Thank you!!

I have one, and it does get warm. It’s great at about 70 degrees and lower. Any warmer than that and I don’t like it. I don’t put that much stuff in it, so I haven’t had a problem remembering where things are. Money and credit card in one interior pocket, phone in another, and a few sheets of my notes or other paper information in a third. I like it because I can then be completely hands free and still feel my things are secure. But not in warm weather.

I've used both Exofficio and Scottevest products for years, and love them. Many folks here on the forum don't, not sure why. I love having no purse, having my valuables secure, and use my backpack for snacks, guidebooks, and layers.
The vests I use most often are the "feather-light" vests, not sure the current term. I have used them in summer, and in winter wear them under my winter coat .
What I have learned-
The vests with the zip off sleeves are too heavy for summer. They are great for shoulder season.
Scottevest products are getting very expensive; Exofficio are more reasonable, with better sales. There are several Scottevest products listed on EBay ; many folks seem to use them for one trip and then sell them.
The sizes on Scottevest products usually run small; Exofficio sizes are more true to size., in my experiences.
Scottevest products usually have a clear interior pocket, which is great for keeping a metro/ vaporreto pass, as it will scan without removing the pass.
After awhile, you will have a system as to where you keep your wallet , glasses, passport, charger cable, etc.
I use a Bandolier phone case with strap, so my phone is always attached to me, and I can't accidentally get bumped and drop it in a canal, ravine, etc. These run about $100, but worth every penny to me.
Any more questions, ask away.
Safe travels!

Not a woman, but I have a ScotteVest fleece jacket. Like others said, it is great for cooler weather. The regular jackets look nice as well, the vests...I am just not a "vest" person, but maybe as an underlayer beneath a regular jacket.

Depending on the model and number of pockets, they can get heavy compared to a regular jacket, but they are very convenient for carrying your cell phone, wallet, and mine has a pocket that fits my tablet.

Thank you Paul, Pat, and Karen! Your input is valuable to me. And I didn't know that Exofficio made travel vests also. Thanks again!

Guy here: I have several Scott E multi-pocket shirts but cannot speak to the vest. You can see several yootoobs from satisfied customers and probably some critics. They're going to be mostly about guys, though. Reviewers indicate the lightweight vest is comfortable to about 80F but gets warm quickly.

My first question when shopping for this type of clothing (considered Clothing Arts but they turned out to be twits) was how many pockets I REALLY needed. The 9-pocket vest appealed to me but, because my pants/shorts have two security pockets (when traveling, I also use a neck wallet), I ended up with the far more practical 3-pocket shirts in short and long sleeves. The pockets are a bit small but all I happen to need. My guy shirts are similar to the SusieQzip products.

I like my Scott e Vest very much for hands free travel. I don’t tend to carry much with me anyway, and the vest is more comfortable (for me) than carrying a purse.

I use it much the way Karen described, and also find it comfortable in cooler temperatures - I don’t usually wear it in hot summer temps.

And as Pat said, they do run small, so if you decide to get one, be sure to try it on. I would also suggest that when trying it on, put things in the pockets, so you get a sense for how it fits that way. I tried on my normal size and it fit perfectly with nothing in the pockets – putting anything in the pockets made it “bulgy.” One size up and I can use the pockets easily, and it fits fine.

I ordered a Scott evest but returned it. Didn’t like all the bulk behind the neck. Also didn’t like the short boxy fit. I’m a tall gal, plus-sized, and even the men’s vest was shorter than I wanted.

I found a multi pocket vest at Eddie Bauer outlet. The pockets aren’t fancy, and not as efficient. But the fabric works for me, and it’s longer. There are some lovely, nicely-tailored travel vests out there for women more petite than I. :-)

At one point, I thought about sewing my own from a Saf-T-pockets pattern. I could customize everything, including pocket size. My sewing skills weren’t up to that challenge!

Thank you for the additional replies! I think I may try the featherweight vest-- mainly for travel days. I have a short torso, so the length should be OK. I don't need to carry a lot, but I need some things at hand at all times (medications and such) when sitting in bulkhead airplane seats. Last trip I tried to keep my very, very, very tiny crossbody bag on my body, and the flight attendants still made me put it overhead. At least they won't make me take my vest off! If the weather is too warm when touring, I guess I'll just have my husband stuff his pants pockets! Thank you for the advice on other brands and advice on sizing. I appreciate all the replies!

Looks like Magellans also carries travel vests, but doesn't have as many inside zipper pockets.
Safe travels!

Columbia makes some very light vests for fishing and running that have a lot of pockets and are thin enough for warm(ish) weather - the one I have is so light that I actually think of it as a foulard with pockets rather than a sleeveless jacket. The light ones don't show on their regular store webpage right now, maybe because the season is over?

I always put my small crossbody bag in the seat pocket in front of me. The attendants don't see it and it's handy if I need it before the plane reaches cruising altitude.

With regards to vests, I used to wear one when I first started traveling, but finally stopped. I found them too bulky, too hot and not sufficient for my needs. Also, I am a bit busty and the vest just never really fit right and I did not like the high neck. I'm fine with my crossbody bag when I'm out and about and I like being able to carry some things that won't fit in the vest, like my Kindle, travel notebooks and so on.

Wife and I both have Scottevests. We don't wear them everyday while touring about. Mostly in while transit to keep our docs and electronics handy. I like that they are designed to keep a slim, no-bulges profile. My beef is that they're cut for more fit and trim silhouettes, so we need bigger sizes. I try to keep things in the same pockets from day-to-day, trip-to-trip, so I limit the number of pockets I need to get into regularly.

I have one of the featherweights as well, and yes its much more comfortable in warm weather, just fewer pockets.

Thank you all! Nice to hear from stan, who has the featherweight vest I am considering!
