RS rolling Carryon - 21” expandable question

3 years ago I purchased the 19” expandable and used it through Italy. My DH has a 21.5” eagle creek. I really like his more and was going to buy that, it really is just that much roomier.

So, I go to the RS store and see he has a new 21”! For those of you who have the 19”, is it a lot roomier all around? The price is hard to beat and the turquoise matches my velocity bag. I’d rather have that is there is a considerable difference.

Thanks

I only discovered RS about a year and a half ago, so I can't comment on the 19" bag. But I purchased the current rolling bag a while back and it's turned out to be one of my best pieces of luggage. It's mainly used as a carryon but has handled being checked quite well. The expansion feature is nice, and the bag is all around durable and functional.

I bought this bag because I wanted something that would pass muster on both domestic and transatlantic flights, and the rolling carryon really fits the bill, though it's too large for US commuter planes or (I assume) most intra-European carriers like Ryanair. Most of my travel is on major American carriers, and I've never had to check the bag except on the rare occasions when I needed to expand it and pack it really full. Plenty of pockets but not too many. I really like the full length pocket on the front which will acommodate a light jacket or sweater.

The bag is in the medium price range, but is currently on sale for 20% off. I recommend it. (No, I don't work for RS, just a satisfied luggage customer;)

Thank you for your response! I’ve been researching and found that RS includes the wheels as part of the total length.

So, for any RS personnel, is this bag the same one from 2015, or is it bigger?

I have had what I believe is the current RS rolling carryon for quite a few years. When I purchased it - it was a new slightly smaller size than the RS roller I had before and is the model my spouse still uses. I love my bag and find it very easy to pack, however I can't compare it easily in size to the 19" bag you mention. You could measure the inside dimensions of your bag - on mine the inside length is 19" and width is 13". Since the lid isn't stiff, and includes packing space, I couldn't get an accurate depth. I find it very easy to pack and easily fits everything I need for a two week trip. (I could go longer without more stuff as we sink wash and re-wear our clothes.) I like to use eagle creek packing cubes and make one layer in my suitcase with two small and one medium cube. These fit perfectly in the 19"x13" space available in the RS rolling carry-on. For the short time I used a 19" (outside dimension) EC bag (model no longer available). I found packing was a bit of a scrunch and I went back to my RS rolling carry-on. I'm guessing you won't be able to notice a difference between your husband's 21.5" EC bag and the 21" Rick Steves bag in terms of packing room. You also might want to measure the outside dimensions of the bag you have now and compare with the website info about the current rolling bag. Just in case it really is very close to the same size you already have... That said - being happy with your suitcase can certainly add to the enjoyment of a trip!

Thanks Nancy,

I think it must be the same bag from 2015. It’s sort of rounded at the top a little? I remember reading reviews of this bag 4 years ago, it was fairly new and people were complaining they missed the 22” bag. My husband also bought his at the same time and the one for sale with Eagle Creek now, I think is a bit smaller than what he might have purchased.

Eagle Creek's dimensions include wheels and handles.

Which model from Eagle Creek are you looking at? If we know, we can compare.

My experience...every RS rolling bag I've had has either arrived with a problem or broke soon after initial use. I've owned numerous EC bags and never had a problem.

You're right that it's the same bag, remeasured to include the wheels. While we've introduced a few different products in recent years, we have not made any bag larger.

I have 2 RS bags. The one being discussed and the older one. Never has any problems with either of them
