I have this bag in the plum color and I really like it. It’s light, very well designed and fits quite a bit with packing cubes.

If you’re using this as your carry on, what are you using as your personal item? The Appenzell Day Pack?
I have used a tote style Longchamp Le Pliage bag. I used the medium size when we went to London, but I also got on clearance another style from Nordstrom. This tote expands by unzipping it and then when I arrive I zipit back to its smaller size and have used it as a large day purse.
This next trip I am going to use the Ori Bantry bag (medium) I bought at LHR last year. It will be interesting to see if I like a tote vs. a backpack.

On my first post (edited here) I misremembered and realized I took the expandable one not to London, but on an Amtrak trip. BTW Cheers for Amtrak and their less than strict luggage rules!

Mustlovedogs--I use the Longchamp Le Pilage tote for my every day purses at home and also when traveling. I also have that expandable bag, which is wonderful for bringing purchases home;)
Mikliz, were you able to use the expandable one as your personal item on an international trip? I was afraid its size would be prohibitive. We’re flying British Air this September and I was wondering if I could let my daughter use it as her personal item. It “squishes” so maybe that is doable?
I used it as my carryon. We were there for the markets, so bought a lot of stuff so I had to check my RS rolling bag. Then I used the expandable for my carryon and my regular purse as my personal item. I would think if the expandable was not full it might pass for a personal item.

There are two backpacks I was led to by all of the wonderful enablers on this site. The Roka/Ori brand and the one I recently bought for my son. Here is the links to them if you want to take a look. In the US you will see them marketed as OrI London rather than Roka London. Same bag though I believe. They do offer free shipping on their website for a purchase over $75.

This is my hiking day pack, and also what I take as a personal item on many flights. I have been using it for years and swear by it! It is very light too, under 2 pounds. I like the pocket configuration as it works great for hiking, but also for traveling. There is a zippered mesh pocket in the main compartment and that is a perfect spot for my passport. I can see at a glance that it is there. It is on sale at the REI outlet now for only $116 which is a great deal!
