RS Rolling Carry-on dimensions

I'm trying to help someone choose a rolling bag for an international trip. I don't have the RS Rolling Carry-on so I'm turning to the folks here for advice.

1) I know what the stated dimensions are of the bag, but has anyone here taken it successfully on some of the more restrictive European airlines that state a depth limit of just under 8". Did you get the bag to fit in the sizer?

2) Is the length an actual 20" including wheels and handles or is it more?

3) When measuring the bottom of the bag (where the wheels connect) from front to back (the hard shell), how deep is it? Is that the thickest point or is the the top even deeper?

Thanks.

I just went and measured mine for you. The length is exactly 20 inches from the bottom of the wheels to the very top. The soft handle that you would lift it is not right on the top, but bends to the front, so you don't have to worry about that.

The depth is just under 7.5" from end of wheel to hard portion of the suitcase.. This means you literally only have half an inch to fill it out more to be at 8". The width at its widest is exactly 14"

Hope that helps.

My wife uses this bag, me the backpack version. I seem to recall hers going in the sizer with Easy Jet, Pisa to Paris; we also took a Vueling flight without issue.

I bought the 20" rolling bag for my recent 17 day trip. I won't comment on the size, because I checked the bag. It easily fit BA's carryon requirements. It was light enough to easily carry up stairs or lift overhead, which happens more than you think. However, before you recommend this bag, I would consider the retracting handle. This handle was a huge annoyance on my trip. It would not extended when needed. I would have to carry the bag out of the way of the crowd and fuss with the retractable handle. Ultimately, it would work, but it was extremely annoying, with both retracting and extending. I have found one position in which the handle will extend the first try in 2 out of 3 tries, but it requires two hands, a certain position next to the bag, etc. Just annoying. I tried DW-40 when I got home, but this did not resolve the issue. Just my experience and I am waiting to see if RS says this is a fluke or a common problem. Everything else about the bag I loved, but because of the handle issues I would not recommend the bag…unless mine was an anomaly.

As an addendum to my prior comment, RS is replacing my bag. My handle issue was apparently an anomaly. Great customer service by RS. So now I say to Frank II, OK to recommend this bag as I had loved everything else about it. And I commend RS for such prompt and responsive customer service. Wray

Thanks, everyone, I ordered one in last week's sale and it arrived today.

I expected it to basically be the convertible carryon with wheels but I can see some differences.

The top vertical pocket does not go the full length of the bag on the roller like it does on the convertible
I was hoping to put a jacket in there.

Also, no key fob.

And 6 lbs, 5.5 oz is not "just over six pounds. It's closer to six and a half pounds.

Frank, There is a full length pocket for a light jacket, but the access zipper is on the side. The old zipper that used to be for the full length pocket on the old 22" bags, now is perfect for the 3-1-1 bag. I kept my airline seat needs, those items not in my purse in a bag in the larger, lower zippered pocket, which provides fast access on the flight…although I think I'm over carrying it on, will just check my luggage on most flights from now on. Anyway, I liked its organization.

The other thing I noticed was a weird smell coming from both the bag and the packing cube set.

I'm also not thrilled with the way they attached the cardboard product tag to the packcing cubes--with a white plastic through the fabric part of two cubes.. Not there are two holes in one of the small cubes and one hole in the large cube. This could rip later on. You would think since all other sides are mesh, they could have gone through the mesh to attach the tag and not the fabric.

I'm going to let them air out but if the smell persists they are going back.

And the zipper to get into the lining of the bag is backward....the pull is on the inside. Not the easiest way of using it if I should want to hide something under the lining.

I didn't have this trouble with the rolling backpack although the first one of those had to go back due to a faulty extending handle.

I purchased this bag because of the smaller dimensions & have carried it on American, European & Asian planes. The only person who ever questioned me was an over zealous airline employee in the U.S. I firmly told him of the European approved dimensions & that I carry on the bag all the time. I knew it would fit in the overhead & it did. Of course, there will be times on small commuter-type planes when gate checking will be needed. The bag actually looks quite small when empty, but fits a lot. Using this bag in combination with a tote is all I need for a one to three month trip abroad.
