I finally ordered the RS Civita shoulder bag since it was on sale. For those of you who do urban sketching, this bag is just the right size and shape. It's lightweight and the main section can hold a Strathmore 8.5 x 11 inch sketchbook. It's also flat enough and small enough to go under your coat for security if you wear a coat that is a bit roomy. Sketch on!
Oh how I wish I had some sketching or painting talent!! In my dreams I am the person who needs a bag in which to fit a sketchbook . . .
Another good thing about the Civita shoulder bag is that the zipper of the main compartment doesn't go too far down along the sides of the bag, so you can if need be leave the zippers open and use it like a mini-tote with your baguette or bouquet or whatever sticking out the top without the bag falling open.
Also the 'lightly padded' handle is not contoured into an arch so you can easily carry the bag facing out or facing in depending on your situation (crowds, buses, etc.)
I have carried a sketchbook and pencils since 2004 using my civita day bag. It is big enough to add other day items with the drawing items. A simple string bag also works but not as comfortable or big for other items. Other cross body bags and purses are not big enough. Hooray for the civita day bag. Even used it as a packing light bag on a 3 week trip. I packed real light. The weather was warm.
I have long used the Veloce bag and it works great for my sketch gear. A little smaller than the Civita, which I like since I can use it for lots of purposes and in different ways. The sketchbook has to be smaller but I don't like a large sketchbook when I am moving around a lot. I can easily fit my media case in it too.
