Rick's Shaving Soap

So I'm sitting in my hotel on a very rainy day and I decided to peruse some Youtube videos. I came across this one of RS going through his toiletry kit:

https://youtu.be/Dy9DJg0fygQ

Interesting how he doesn't always practice what he preaches. One thing I didn't see what some type of shaving soap. There was a razor and blades, but no soap.

Has he every mentioned what he uses to shave with?

You can use anything to shave with--shampoo, soap, vaseline, etc. Geez, you must be more bored than he was in that video! haha

Ponder this. Rick packs light and uses carry on luggage. The limit for aerosols in a carry on is 100 ml., approximately 3.4 oz. That eliminates anything larger than a sample size can of shaving cream which for a long trip is the same as nothing. Buy some when you arrive.

Yes, that's what Rick says: buy items like this when you arrive.

Kent,
Are you SURE you are not Rick Steves? This has been a really enlightening thread.
My question, " Does Rick really do all his laundry "in the sink?" Or does a staff person or the hotel laundry do it? That green shirt looks pretty darn good. Could it be that there are three or four green shirts? Just wondering :)

It's interesting....I asked if anyone knows what Rick does. I never asked for suggestions on what I should do.

And, apparently, people didn't watch the video because while Rick says you should buy things when you get there....he brings, soap, shampoo, extra razor blades, enough toothpaste to see him through, and so on.......watch the video.

And how does he get everything in one 3-1-1 bag?

Kent,
Thank you for all that information. I will sleep well tonight. Although, I'm still wondering if there are multiple green shirts. Maybe Laura knows . . .

I think Rick mentioned in one of his 'How We Make the Show' episodes that he DOES take a couple shirts that are the same so they have fewer continuity issues. As I recall, yes, there is more than one green shirt :)

I don't think he has "people", but he probably sends his laundry out. Laundry is a very easy thing to have done in Italy and they do a beautiful job. I am sure if he actually wore the shirts he washes in the sink you would notice in the video's. They don't allow irons in hotel rooms over there.

Judy: Fast forward to 19:00 minutes into the video below and Rick talks about his shirts and using an iron.

He basically says he does his own shirts and every hotel he's every stayed in has an iron the guests can borrow.

Frank II,

I suspect that Rick hasn't shown all the items in his kit. He mentioned there were other items that were stored in the stuff sack, but he didn't open that. There may have been a bottle of shaving oil in the larger bag? It's also possible that he just uses bar soap or similar for shaving.

We carry Noxzema with us. We can use it for face cleaning and shaving.

"How does he get all that in his 3-1-1 baggie"

Response, he didn't!

Note the date the video was uploaded? August 2011. Well before the idiots decided that you and I could only be trusted with the small containers LOL!

(And if you think the 3-1-1 rule protects you think again. Everyone who works at the airport and airline etc.. is exempt. Guess who was a member of the original liquid bomb plot??? One of those trusted airport employees LOL!)

The 3-1-1 rule went into effect in September of 2006 nearly five years before he made the video.

Opps you are right.. I was thinking of one of the other "useless" regulations.

So maybe he uses the "ask a Flight Attendant" trick since they are deemed to be trustworthy! LOL~!

Or maybe he knows what a lot of us know.... the system does not work! (I have a tube of hand lotion in my purse. I have had one in there non stop since they started the stupid "liquid ban" If an agent ever finds it I plan to send a letter congratulating them and pointing out that it only took a over a decade with almost weekly fights! They can't really "see liquids" regardless of the hype!)

Rick has discussed the fact that he has to be careful to keep his on-camera shirt clean for several days, since there are not multiples.

Just to show how we all do things differently, I find that the sample size shaving cream lasts me several trips!
