Hello Friends, I have quite a few friends who travel to Japan often and love to skip packing any clothes and instead rent travel outfits which get delivered to their hotel rooms upon arrival. (After your trip, you just put all the rental clothing in the bag it came in and give it to your last hotel clerk.) A popular service is Any Wear, Anywhere. Has anyone else tried this service or similar services? I’m not sure if it’s popular in Europe yet but I’m tempted to try it. (I hear TRVL Porter and Baggageless Travel Clothing Rental are popular ones too.) I think the idea is you can just about board the plane with only your toothbrush and passport in hand. Thanks!
Everyone is free to do as they wish and travel as they want, but this just sounds dreadful.
Sounds good to me! I have never heard of this!
Being an almost 5’10” woman I would really hesitate to think the clothing would really fit. One of many things that would give me pause about this service, but saying that, if I checked a bag that went astray it could be a good fallback option.
Nope, haven't done it and wouldn't ever do it. I'm very picky about the fit and fabric (I dislike high maintenance fabrics) of my own clothes. Underwear? Shoes? No interest in renting those used items. Let's just say that boarding a plane with just a toothbrush and passport isn't exactly realistic for the majority of us. I'd rather pay the cost to check bag of clothing/toiletries that I am familiar with, have broken in, and enjoy than a load of stuff that I might hate.
Ewww. The ick factor is strong with this one. A set of rented clothing of unknown quality and fit had better come in at a considerable savings over travelling with a carry on, or checking a bag. And one would have to assume that this would only work if you were only staying at one place for the entire trip. Otherwise you would still need a suitcase. Not how I travel. I care about the quality and fit of my clothing. And I'm certainly not wearing rented underwear, socks or shoes. Now, if I was suddenly confronted with the need for formal wear for an evening while on vacation, I might very well look into renting for one night.
Interesting idea for sure, especially if you like the style of clothing offered (I took a quick peek - definitely not my jam). I would worry about clothes and shoes fitting properly (I'm petite and have tiny persnickety feet) and nothing worse than feeling uncomfortable in something that doesn't feel good or gives you blisters. But if you try it out, please report back as I think many of us would be very curious about your experience.
I’m short and have to try on way too many clothes and shoes before I find one thing that fits. I have a three size body, so a size 8 dress might fit my waist but not my chest or vice versa.
I can’t imagine wearing rental undies.
I can see it being very helpful for things like outerwear. I think about when we did ski vacations with four kids. Or maybe formalwear? But, it does sound like the intent is to provide all clothing (except I would hope, underclothes and socks).
Just taking a look at Travlporter, I see issues right off the bat.
"Your personally styled rental travel wardrobe starts with two items minimum for $130 ($65 each). Select as many additional items as you need for your trip for $65 per item for up to 2 weeks."
So $130 for just two items of clothing that I have to send back? What if my trip is longer than 2 weeks? What if my order doesn't show up? What if I'm staying in a rental apartment with no one to accept advance delivery?
"As with any clothing item ordered online, unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that every piece will fit perfectly. To be safe, we suggest you bring a few of your staple items in your carry-on to ensure that you have some of your favorites on hand. "
Sooo, I still have to pack way more than my passport and toothbrush, yes? They also do not say that if the items you ordered don't fit that you don't have to pay for them. Guess I'm really surprised that this sort of thing works for your friends, Jenny, but hey, I'm surprised about a LOT of things these days! :O)
Jules, I can see it maybe working for outerwear or formalwear for a wedding but fit and potential delivery issues still hang me up.
I think I would be more tempted by the Aldi Special where ski clothing is on sale

So $130 for only 2 items for 2 weeks, and no guarantee they will fit. Remind me how much it costs to carry on a bag with enough of my own clothes for a week? How about how much to check a bag? Jenny, you seem to have quite a few friends who have both a large disposable income, and no particular interest in well fitting clothes. Even your friends must board their flights with more than a passport and toothbrush. Or do they not wear underwear and socks? Perhaps their first stop on the way to their hotel is a department store or pharmacy for the necessities?
I quite enjoy planning what I will take and wear, so this is a no from me. But hopefully there will be some people who find your post useful and interesting.

Looking at the Any Wear, Anywhere site and reading the FAQs I did note that the service is only available to guests of APARTMENT HOTEL MIMARU locations in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. https://anywear-anywhere.com/pdf/faq.pdf
What's next? Leaving one's spouse at home and renting one upon arrival? Ewwww! Double icky!
Unlike rental clothing, rental spouses have been around for thousands of years.
