The yearly REI Anniversary Sale, usually the week before Memorial Day in May, is when the BIG promotions happen, the rest of the outdoor industry braces and small independent shops grumble.
The members sale is a nice promotion to generate some business before the BIG sale. Members have gotten savy and sales dip in April as they sandbag and anticipate the anniversary sale.

The Garage Sales are where the REAL REI bargains are. Most stores now have a garage sale section with huge savings on used/returned items. But yeah, if you think something you want will be on deep discount soon, hold onto your credit card.
