RedOxx PUP Bag - Test Pack. Back by One Request!

I used a medium sized Ebags classic packing cube.
My PUP already had the typical purse contents. In the main compartment, I added a packed Ebags medium cube and my iPad. The cube contained - 1 bra, 2 pairs of undies, 1 pair of medium weight work pants, 3 rolled thicker weight cotton t-shirts. There was still spare room in the cube. I then folded over the outer edge of the cube on one side to get it to fit in my PUP bag. (Small cubes may be better.). After getting the cube situated - there was still room to add 2 pairs of folded up socks into the bag. The PUP bag was not stuffed to the max. (I should have tried a quart size 3-1-1 ziplock bag. I bet I could get it in with little finagling. I use flimsy ziplocks rather than a rigid 311 bag. I carry minimal liquids.). The outer zip pocket where I keep napkins and tissues could be a good space for a flat style 311 bag.

My PUP bag weighed 9.25 lb.s with the above contents.

The PUP can be carried by hand, over arm, or over shoulder with the attached nylon straps. For long corridors - I recommend paying extra for the claw rubber shoulder strap. Alternatively, there is a trolley strap and the bag can just ride on top of your suitcase.

Thank You - Will it fit well under an airplane seat as a Personal Item? I just ordered one in Mariner !!
I plan to use my Tom Bihn Absolute Strap with it - I like it better than the Red Oxx ones. Thanks so much for this review.

It most certainly will fit underseat as a personal item. Even the larger MUTT will work underseat. But, the MUTT is larger and too much for me. Better for a tall, stocky guy like my 6 ft. tall husband. If I need a larger bag - I have my lighter weight Patagonia ultralight tote pack for that size.

I bought the iris purple one and added red monkey fist zipper pulls at extra cost for fun and contrast. The bags come with black reflective pulls, not silver gray as shown online.

I pilfered a strap off of my husband’s older gator bag. The strap really helped at a 3 day convention where I had to walk quite a bit in long corridors.

Thanks, Sun-Baked! I'm leaning away from the Pop Tote after looking at it more closely and harder at the P.U.P. so this is very helpful! I will look at it again more closely.

Is the Ebag classic packing cube one of the rectangular ones (like the RS cubes)? Or is it a slim longer cube? I have the slim longer Ebag cubes but also have the RS ones and I'm wondering which would work best.

I also was wondering whether this would qualify as a personal item. My experience has been mainly with Lufhansa and maybe other airlines are more lenient. Lufhansa measurements are 40 cm x 30 cm x 10 cm which, if I am converting correctly is approximately 15.8" x 11.8" x 3.9". Looking at the Redoxx site, the PUP measurements are 12" x 11.5" x 6". Will they allow that 6" inch measurement--instead of the 3.9" limit--given that the 12" measurement is much less than the 15.8 measurement for Lufthansa?

I really struggle to meet the requirements as stated by the airlines and 3.9" is very narrow. If they do not pay attention to the 3.9" measurement, that would be great.

Inspired by your questions, I did a 2nd test pack. In addition to the above, I added one more pair of undies and 3 pair of thick athletic socks to the packing cube. I then fully unzipped the main compartment and folded back the black fabric zipper flaps. I could squish the Ebags regular medium cube (not slimline) into the bag. This bloats the bag and intrudes on the volume of the outer pockets. I maxed out the bag. The total weight of bag and contents is 10 lb.s.

I also packed a filled 3-1-1 quart sized Tom Bihn pouch in the outer zip pocket. To keep it real, I added a couple of face masks, napkins, and 2 travel-sized tissue packets to this outer pocket as well. The end pockets contain 1 cell phone and 1 small bottle of hand sanitizer. The back, snap magazine pocket can hold papers (tickets, travel info., gossip magazine).

Despite all this, the PUP still offers a little more space. I can still add a few tiny packets of peanut M & M’s. Note: 3-1-1 bag needs to be a flexible 1 quart size (zip-lock bag or similar) to fit outer pocket.
The bag stands up on its own when mostly packed.

Mardee,
Later on, I will try my Ebags slimline and RS cubes to see how they fit for you. So, you won’t have to guess.
Deborah,
I have never flown Lufthansa. I recently looked up Lufthansa dimensions. Lufthansa has really strict sizes. The PUP bag will be too thick for you. Fully packed - it bulges out to about 8.” The issue is not length. The space for thickness/depth has to do with the floor to the underside of the seat for a personal, underseat item. Shortness in one dimension does NOT compensate for too long in another. It’s all about fitting the space. For Lufthansa - look at purses and laptop bags.

Deborah,
Tom Bihn has the cadet which is really close. You just can’t stuff it to the max.. You will also need to use something like Ebags slimline cubes which I really like for a) socks and undies b) travel brochures and guide book c) snacks and d) bathing suit, cover, and extremely flat flip-flops. Or, just roll a few clothing items and stuff in to bag.
RedOxx has the metro. brief case which is really close and can’t be stuffed to the max.
Check the weight of the bags. The cadet would probably be easier to use as a day bag at your destination.
Also, look at over-shoulder totes. There is a recent thread posted here about that. Lots of tote choices.

Packing Cubes and the PUP
Mardee,
I used several styles of packing cubes here. I took all of the above contents from my Ebags medium cube and repacked the PUP a couple of times to see which cubes worked.
2 Slimline Ebags Packing Cubes (Not compression cubes):

These worked. The PUP can hold two of them fully packed. Then, the main compartment of the bag is nearly maxed-out. Cubes can be stacked vertically or stacked “flat on their backs.” The equivalent of 1 Ebags medium packing cube. But, I had to squash my clothes to get all of them to fit. Rough packing.
1 large 14” RS cube:
This is slightly larger than an Ebags medium cube. Could hold all above contents. (Cube was not stuffed to max.). Could fit in PUP bag. Just can’t stuff this cube to the max and expect it to fit PUP bag well.
1 Small 10” RS Cube:
This worked best. It could fit all above contents (cube was maxed out). Compacted my clothing. Fit easily into the PUP bag and left spare space for a 3-1-1 kit easily. I didn’t have to force/squash my clothing either.
Thank you for your question Mardee. I learned a couple of things about my new bag and packing cubes from this exercise.

Wow, Sun-Baked, I'm so impressed by your research and work on getting it right! Thank you for all this information! And I had to laugh when you said that you could still fit a pack of peanut M&Ms in there - that's good to know!

I was on the website again looking at the bag and was checking out the monkey fist zip knots. Those intrigued me so I looked them up and found a tutorial on YouTube showing how to make the knots. My attempt was not very good but it was fun to try and I might take that on as a project. :) Although I may just give up and buy the set on RedOxx. :)

I also packed a filled 3-1-1 quart sized Tom Bihn pouch in the outer zip pocket.

Is that the 3D organizer cube you're talking about? I have the older style version of that and was wondering how it would fit in there.

Yes Mardee. The 3D TB clear organizer is the one I used. It fits well in the exterior zip pocket along with a few extras as noted above. If you use a small 10” cube, you can also put your 3-1-1 bag in the main compartment.

I am impressed that you tried the monkey fist knot in para cord. I was thinking about making my own as a hobby. The Monkey Fist is a difficult knot. The RedOxx ones are made from USA paracord, but tied in Guatemala. The RedOxx company is actually helping a small village by humane and fair labor practices with this project. Otherwise, all other RedOxx products are made in the USA with USA materials.

The bag comes with standard black zipper pulls. I bought and added the red ones. I am keeping the original zipper pulls for replacements as needed.
