The telescoping handles of my Ravenna Carry-on bags no work easily and are often difficult to push down or extend. In spite of this I am considering buying two more while they are on sale. What has been the experience of recent purchasers of the Ravenna Carry-on bags? Would you buy that model of carry on bag again? Two Osprey carry-ons arrived today from REI and I am going to return them because too much of the bag is a duplicate of my Osprey backpack which is my personal item on international flights. Carry on suitcase needs to only carry a months worth of clothes.
My wife and I each have 8 year old Ravenna Rolling Cases. To be honest, neither of us has had any issues with the handles: they extend and contract quite easily, even after 5 RS tours. Plus, getting 20% off during the sale is a huge plus.
The handle broke on mine two weeks after getting it.
There was also a mention on the forum that this bag is being replaced with a new bag in 2025. I believe it's going to be called the Riga.
I tried to find the post--by a staff member of RS--but it's been deleted. Perhaps that person was not supposed to mention the bag.
With regard to the telescoping handles on the current bags that don't work well, there should be a luggage repair shop in the area that can address the problem. All the RS bags we've ever had a built so that a zipper on the inside of the main compartment allows access to the mechanism. Should be an easy fix. Take a look - you might be able to correct the problem yourself.
Have you contacted the Rick Steves office about the telescoping handles? The bag has a lifetime guaranty.
I’ve mentioned this several times now. We just replaced by warranty, one of our Ravenna Carryon bags that we’ve had for over seven years. Staff did mention that the bag is being discontinued but we like the bag so much that we opted to go with it rather than one of their other bags. As far as problems with the telescoping feature, I have found that if I put shoes in the upper zippered section and then overpack, it doesn’t work well and I have to re-adjust. They are soft sided bags.
Ditto what an above poster said......Rick's team is good about replacing items under warranty. We had the really old (as in two decades or more ago) rollaboard, had a wheel problem, and they replaced it with the then-newer model item (which we did not like as well as the old one, but they still did replace it with the most like-kind available). That was maybe 10 years ago or so.
Likely they would replace your bag with the problem handle, then you can just buy ONE more while they are on sale, unless you love it so much that you want to "stockpile" two more for future travels. Once a favorite item is no longer made, it's hard tor impossible to find years from now.
When we had a problem on our second original rollaboard, my husband did "open heart surgery" on it and was able to fix the problem, using parts from an old RS rollaboard my sister was discarding. But, hubby is an amazing Mr. Fix it.....I would never have been able to do something like that, left to my own devices.
Call the RS on-line store and see if they "make it right" for you. You'll likely post again with your delight :)
Thank you for encouraging me to contact RS Travel Store. They had me take a photo of the Ravenna Bags and offered to replace them. They said black was only color offered because bag was being replaced in 2025 and they had sold out of all colors except black.
I apologized and said I knew I over packed the suitcase. But added we had completed 14 tours and had reservations on three more in 2025.
Travel Store personnel were kind and generous. Thank you TF members for motivating me to inquire directly.
