Rain Jacket for Horseback Riding | Patagonia Torrentshell vs OR Aspire Trench

I'm packing for an upcoming horseback riding trek through the highlands and have a Patagonia Torrentshell 3L jacket or an Outdoor Research Aspire Goretex trench jacket that I can choose to bring. Curious if anyone has any experience between the two to recommend one over the other. We will be riding most of the day and likely in some windy and very rainy conditions.

I’d check with the horseback riding outfit to see if they supply raincoats for horseback. I’ve never been on a riding trip that didn’t. When you are on horseback in serious rain you want a coat made for that purpose, not a general purpose raincoat.

Where are you going to ride? And when? Friends and I rode in Donegal Ireland years ago in July. Had one day with cold wind and another rained.

I don’t have a brand recommendation. Do a Google search for long riding coats.
My suggestions are wear a rain coat long enough to cover your legs to keep them dry. Coat with inside leg straps will keep it from flapping. The back needs to zip or button upward to fit over the saddle. The front needs a two way zipper for the same reason. You could add waterproof pants to use with your jacket but I think they can be hot. Be sure the hood will fit over your riding helmet.
Take gloves with grip so wet reins won’t slip through your hands.
Sheepskin seat saver helped a lot for saddle comfort.

I doubt if the stable will provide rain coats. They might have helmets and paddock boots, but wearing used can be nasty.

Happy Trails!

Thanks. The trip is in Iceland, and I did just check the organizer's site and they will have rain gear. So I will take my jacket as a regular jacket to have and know that there will be back up. I also have rain paints, though not riding rain pants. I debated and debated over getting a pair, but didn't want to spend $200+ on a pair of riding pants I may not wear again. The company says they have rain pants too.

We rode in Iceland last summer and are again this fall. Neither place asked us to bring anything besides regular hiking boots and a jacket. I took my OR Aspire jacket last summer and wore that while riding, but it is not the longer length. It worked just fine, and is going with me yet again, FWIW. Iceland is very particular about bringing in riding gear, so that is why the outfitters supply all of that.
