Question for those that own the Veloce shoulder bag

Hi everyone,
I really like the Veloce shoulder bag over the Euro flight bag. I have the Veloce guide bag that I love but I want the extra room that the shoulder bag has to carry on as my personal item. After looking at the videos, I don't want or need the backpack straps, I want to be able to carry it in front of me. So my question to those that own one already is, do you think I would be able to cut off the backpack straps without causing damage to the bag? If it is as sturdy as the guide bag, I think it would be ok but before I spend the money on it I would like some input from someone that has one and can give me their personal opinion. Thanks for any advice, Margaret

It is a very tough bag. You might have a problem with the fabric unraveling after cutting -- it does not appear to be a fabric that can be cauterized with a match to prevent unraveling. I suppose one could apply Elmer's Glue to the edges to prevent the unraveling, but that might be messy as well as a real pain to do. Like you, we don't really want the backpack straps, but there have been a couple of occasions we we've needed and used them. We just tuck them away in their own little compartment and forget about them until a need does arise.

Thank you so much TC. Can I ask if you think the straps make much of a difference in the weight of the bag? I won't use it as my daily bag when I travel but I know when I start to get tired, just a little extra weight can make a difference. Do you like the bag overall? I really love the veloce guide bag but I just need a bit more space. Thanks again! Margaret

Go to your fabric store. There are many products on the market. Fray Check or other fabric glues, it may leave a shiny appearance, With careful application and close cutting you'll probably not have trouble.

Thank you tgreen099- I didnt know there was something like that. That may do the job perfectly for me to safely remove the straps! Take care, Margaret

The straps do not (imo) add much weight at all. I'd just leave them as they are. We love the bag.

Thank you again TC, I love how the bag looks. I used the guide bag on my trip to Italy and it really was perfect for me but I think the extra room in this one will be perfect for the airplane. Thanks again! Margaret

This is a great bag, the straps add minimal weight. I have had this bag for 4 years after observing my Rome city tour guide using it. I have since taken 5 tours and used this as my carry on personal item. It has incredible storage space. I use it daily as my take-to-work bag.

I had never used the backpack straps before my Swizerland trip this year but the backpack feature was great for climbing stairs where the elevator service was slow or non-existent. Roll up your smaller day bag, pack it in your suitcase and use it for your day trips.

Thank you for that info Ray. Maybe then I will just leave the straps on. This has been great advice from everyone! I appreciate all the comments very much. Take care all! Margaret

Does this bag have a pass thru sleeve for placing it on the extended handles of a rolling bag? There is a photo of the bag doing this but it's not mentioned anywhere and closeups of the back of the bag photo don't seem to show it.

Yes, it does have the pass through sleeve so it can be attached to the handles of a rolling bag.

I purchased it as my carryon item and love it. Don't cut off the straps, they are very lightweight. I typically just slid it over my RS rolling suitcase, but once in awhile I liked being able to put it on as a backpack for a few minutes. Sometimes I even slipped it in front of my body and held it secure like that in a particular instance, or even just flinging it over one shoulder. I think you would very much regret cutting them off. I love this travel bag!

I also used it as my foot stool on the airplane!

Thank you so much Lulu. I went ahead and ordered the bag and after reading the posts here and your post as well, I will leave the straps on. I am still going to bring the Veloce guide bag for during the day but I really wanted this one for my carry on personal item. I am glad to hear how many people like this bag. Take care, Margaret

I don't think you will regret it. Mthe really are so many compartments! It was amazing all I could get in that baby! It was actually like a small suitcase for me rather than a carryon as it expands.

Lulu can you tell me if you used this as a carry on with a checked bag or as a carry on personal item and a carry on bag too? I bought the RS wheeled carry on and I love it but I also want to bring this as my personal carry on item. I wont be stuffing it, just my mp3, small tablet some snacks etc. I had posted on another post someone had put up about the euro flight bag (that looked bigger than I wanted). I rarely check luggage anymore but my last trip to Italy in Feb 2016 I checked a bag (against my better judgement) and of course it was delayed a day getting to me in Rome and when I returned home I had to return to the airport the next day to get that same suitcase. So that is truly the end of checking luggage for me. I just don't want to get to the airport and they tell me I can't take both bags on the plane with me. Although I've seen people get on planes with what looks like half their bedroom packed in bags and they let them on and I often wondered how they managed to bring it all on. Take care Lulu.

Not Lulu, but here's our experience. We've flown Delta and Easy Jet with the RS Rolling Bag as our carry on and the Veloce bag as our personal item. Of course the airline you fly might have different guidelines.

Thanks again TC! It sounds like this bag is going to be perfect for my needs. Take care, Margaret

Margaret, pick up the phone and call the RS office before you buy the bag if you want to place it over the handle of a roller bag. Our bags do have a pass through strap on the back so it can be placed over the handle of a rolling bag. But I just looked at it on the web site again and they might have changed the design. One photo (lower left) shows it placed over the handle of a rolling bag. However, a close up view of the back of the bag is such that the sleeve does not appear to exist. Perhaps I'm wrong. Maybe this is a design change, or a bad photo, or ???

It will be ok if it doesn't go over the handle. I think that was another poster that asked if it would fit like that. The bag is actually on its way already to me but I think it sounds like just the bag I was looking for. Thanks for the heads up TC!

I asked the same question about fitting over the handles of a rolling bag. Margaret, when you get it, will you let us know if it still has the pass-thru.

Hi Frank,
I will definitely post on here as soon as it arrives. I think the date of delivery is expected to be 8/24 according to the tracking #. Take care, Margaret

Hi..yes, I carried it as my personal item. We went to Italy for 10 days. I purchased the 20" rolling suitcase and the Veloce bag. It fit perfectly over the handles. I put so much in it, and it still fit under the plane seat until I pulled it out as a foot rest. I put my over the shoulder travel purse in it. There are so many pockets I was forgetting where I put things...haha.

Hi everyone,
my bag arrived a short time ago and it is exactly what I wanted! Frank I think you asked if it had the back to attach it to a luggage handle and it does. To all those that wrote about the back pack straps, I see what you meant now. The straps hardly add any weight at all and I will leave them on and who knows, maybe I will want the option to use them. To me it is the perfect size to use as my personal carry on and I am absolutely sure it will have enough room in it for what I want. I am so glad I didn't go with the Euro flight bag, that looked to big to me. Thank you everyone that posted on this question when I asked. I wish there was a way to add some pictures but I guess the ones in the RS store are correct (except maybe you can't see that back part clearly). I really love the Veloce guide bag and will put that in my luggage for daily use, this one is ideal for the plane. Plus, because I had booked the RS Best of Barcelona & Madrid tour for 2017, I received the free $100 coupon for the online store. I got the bag, the best of Spain guide, the RS picnic set and another continental adapter for $104 dollars. So I just paid the $4 dollars extra and the S+H (total $19.97). I am very happy about that! Thank you so much everyone for all the advice and tips!! Margaret

I knew you would love it and I'm so glad you do. Wait until you start discovering all the little hidden pockets. There is a one I can't remember where it's located! I think you were worried about the straps thinking they will be like regular backpacks...but these sort of fold over. And that is great about the price! Enjoy!

I have a question for Veloce shoulder bag fans as well: Is the bag machine washable? I recently spilled a big glop of sunscreen in one of the outer pockets . . . I could probably just sponge it out, but the rest of the (heavily used) bag is getting scruffy after three years of near daily use on a campus setting.

How crazy is it to wonder what a spin thru a gentle cycle in the family washing machine might be?

Hi bpreecs,
I looked at the tag on the bag and it says spot clean and then it says (do not machine wash or dry). It looks sturdy enough though and maybe on gentle it would be fine but if you follow the directions, it shouldnt be washed. If mine was really in need of a bath, personally I would try it on gentle I think..just my opinion though. Good luck! Margaret

TC- Easy Jet allowed you a bag AND a personal item?

Dee, Yes. Of course we did have to pay a little extra (don't remember exactly how much) but it was well worth it. We got to board before anyone else and were guaranteed overhead bin space. We had the RS European size roller bag and the Veloce bag. The option to do this is called "Flexi Fare" and the following is from their web site.

Cabin bags: FLEXI fares
•FLEXI fare customers can bring ONE cabin bag with a maximum size of 56x45x25cm including handles and wheels. In addition you can bring ONE small under seat bag (handbag/laptop) which must be placed under the seat in front.
•Overhead locker space is limited so please use easyJet Plus Speedy Boarding queue to board first in order to secure your space.

Thanks, Margaret, after I saw your note, I did try again to find the tag for the bag, and you're right . . only hand washing recommended. Good luck with your trip . . . I hope you enjoy your bag as much as I do mine.
