Question about Rick Steves carryon

where the zipper come to the top, there is a large black hook, about 1.5 inches and strap. What is this for? When I unhook the strap I can then pull the zippers together. If not, I have to stick it inside the suitcase and zippers don't close together a couple inches.

Also, if I unhook it and bring the zippers together, there are no holes in the zipper to put some sort of lock through. I must not be using this suitcase right.

Lulu, I assume you're asking about the wheeled carryon? The hook and strap allow you to buckle on a second item - a backpack, or your personal item, or whatever - and wheel them both together. The strap stays outside; as you have discovered, if you try to stick it inside the suitcase you can't close the zipper.

Looking at the photo of the current model of this bag, these zippers aren't the 'locking' kind. That doesn't mean they can't be locked, though. You just have to use a very thin lock or use a cable-type that is thus thin enough to thread through the BASE of the zippers (NOT the pulls). Something like this, only of course these don't lock...but I hope you get the idea of a 'cable-type' lock.
