Question about Rick's Euro Flight Bag

Can the Euro Flight Bag be locked? If I get it, I'd be using it as an under the seat bag, and I'm concerned about getting up to use the bathroom on the plane and the bag being secure. Yes, yes, I know, locks aren't really secure, and I can use twist ties, but I'm just curious. Thanks!

You are joking, aren't you? I mean, this isn't a train in World War II Europe.
Of course I will have my passport in my money belt.

Yes, it can be locked. I added split key rings to each zipper pull so I can use a lock to lock the two rings together if I need to do that.

Well, let's hope I survive the fall! I do speak a little French...

Thanks!

"Of course I will have my passport in my money belt."

That's a good plan, but remember you'll need it when checking into hotels. It's always a bit awkward digging into the money belt to retrieve the Passport while the clerk, other guests and anyone else in the lobby are watching.

Hi Sandra, as an earlier poster mentioned, you can figure out a way to lock the Euro bag, but I wouldn't consider it to be secure. It's just a carry on, and I imagine that if someone wanted it, they'd just take it. I wouldn't leave anything expensive or irreplaceable unattended.

To go a little further on Carol's comment, I wouldn't take anything irreplaceable or expensive. Prescription medications, yes, but not heirloom jewelry (and you will have passport, cards and cash strapped to your body in the money belt.)
Using my Euro Flight Bag as my personal item -- love it!

  1. That's why I use a neck wallet instead of a money belt. That and I found the money belt to be very uncomfortable.

  2. In the past 16 years, I have NEVER had to show my passport when checking into my lodging.

Italian hotels retain the passport checking tradition and I think French hotels also asked me last year, but it's standard enough for me not to take much note.

Of course, be sure to retrieve the under-seat bag as you leave. Especially if you have things stashed in multiple places (the overhead rack, coat hook, etc.), then the rush to get off could be distracting.

About the rush to get off the plane -- that's the nice thing about planes, they stop for more than a minute (unlike some trains) so if you don't have an immediate connection you can wait until most other passengers are out if the way and use the time to get organized.

Side note to my earlier comment about the Euro Flight Bag -- it holds a LOT of stuff, so it can get heavy if you are so inclined. Shoulder strap is great, as is the strap that holds the bag on a roller bag handle.

I got the Eruo Flight bag several months ago. We have been 'doing' 1 night trips around the country to see the aging rock bands (I kid hubbby its to recapture his youth) instead of longer International trips due to family health issues. I LOVE this bag! Very well organized. Yes, you could possibly lock the main section (it has double zippers), but the zippers do not have lock holes in the zipper pulls. You'd need to use a lock with a VERY SMALL hasp or do as someone mentioned above, and put split key rings in the top of the pulls, then add a lock. But that would not be very secure (someone can just slide one of the split rings open). I honestly would not worry- I don't think your seat mates will bother your bag while you go to the restroom or walk about the cabin.

One note- I don't think this bag would make a good day bag. It is too large for that. But you could take a smaller messenger bag or foldable tote and pack it in this bag or your main luggage.

I have used the euro bag at a convention and at the airport. I like the organization. But, I find it uncomfortable to lug long distances when loaded. This includes trekking around an airport. I prefer a small backpack with an organizer panel. I am middle-aged. I am shorter than 5'5". I am currently using a Merrell Rouge from ebags.com.
