PSA re Personal items & ID tags

Be sure to have identification easily visible on your personal items when traveling by air.

After reading a first hand account of a passenger that was on the American Airlines flight that caught fire at the gate in Denver last week, I realized that many times I have traveled with no ID on my personal item.

The young man who shared his story on Reddit said that airline personnel brought all personal and carry on items out to the passengers after it was safe to do so.

That's a great reminder Jeanm. I know I have name and phone number on some but certainly not all the bags I might use as a carry on.

Also a good idea to have at least the paper tag on a purse that might be inside your personal bag while boarding, but come out once on the plane.

Oh gosh, I would not have thought of this either! Thanks for posting.

I also have Tiles in all my [2] personal items plus name, address, etc. I just simply write that information on a piece of paper, fold it and stick it in my purse and backpack. Looks like I need to make that info visible in light of what happened.

Thanks for the reminder! I always have my contact info in my suitcase, but not usually in my personal item. It’s on my list of things to do before leaving for Paris next month.

Great reminder. We have for years prepared what I call a grab and go small bag that we take out of our personal carryon. The primary purpose is in case we have to leave quickly and get by without our carryon bags.
Containing: passport, some cash, glasses or contacts, Credit card, small amount of prescriptions, a debit card and phone. Basically what we have in a money belt during the day trips.

Last year on our Portugal Tour our guide suggest we always have a name tag on the outside of our bag. Twice we needed to leave them in Storage room for the hotel staff deliver to rooms. We use Ricks version.

We print out QR code stickers and put them on our bags and backpacks.

Easy to put a small luggage tag on the outside of a backpack or purse.
I also slip my cell phone into my pants pocket for take off and landing, so if we have to evacuate sans bags, I at least have my phone.

I'm sometimes a solo traveler, so I always wear a very slim crossbody bag that has passport, credit cards, iPhone and a small amount of cash. I wear it at all times when I'm out and about, even during during flights. It only comes off when going through security.

No worries of scrounging for items in case of an emergency. But I do need to add ID info to my underseat personal item.

Jean, what bag do you wear? I've been slowly re-working the purses I take when I travel. I finally gave up on my travelon purses. They had plenty of space, but they were just so heavy on my shoulder, so on my most recent trips, I've tried out a few close to the body over shoulder bags not made specifically for travel. I'm still not quite content with what I've got though. Thanks!

KRS, my favorite is a small leather bag with 2 zippered sections. I bought it many years ago when Marshall Fields was still around. It's starting to show a little wear, so I've been looking for a replacement.

I've been using a Baggallini Broadway crossbody that I found at TJ Maxx a couple years ago. While I find most of the Baggallini's bags are not my style, I love the size, weight and functionality of the Broadway bag. And since I'm usually wearing it under a blazer or jacket, I can accept that it's not my preferred aesthetic. However, it's navy.

I recently found the bag in black on Poshmark. It will be with me next week in London.

Good luck with your search.
