Packing Report -- Italy August 27-September 24

I'm jumping on the bandwagon to add my packing report to the mix. Like many of us, I love packing reports: what people took, what worked and what didn't. There's always something new to learn or do differently. Hope someone can glean something from my experience.
My trip report is taking a long time to write. When done hopefully next week, I'll post it.

Packing:
I did it!! I managed to pack carry-on only both outbound AND home. It has only taken me three previous trips to figure out how to pack light plus at least three test packs to measure and weigh RS Rolling Carry-On and my old RuMe 7oz tote. I limited my gift and souvenir shopping to small flat items (Florence leather wallets and Venice/Murano Christmas ornaments). Shipping pottery home from Deruta isn’t cheating, is it? Better than schlepping heavy Christmas presents around for over two weeks.

After purging unneeded paperwork, paperback book and emptying several 311 containers, I came home only two pounds heavier than I left. Next year’s packing list is already updated to cut quantities and unnecessary what-if’s. For future trips, I can buy the extras I need. Italian pharmacies were an adventure when I was dealing with a cold and injured toes from a fall. I keep all my drug info in my iPhone notes so I was able to show the pharmacist what I needed and my reactions to others.

I did sink wash every other day or on the first day of a two day stay. Even though I wore everything I packed, I didn’t need everything I packed. I pack 4 folding hangers so shirts can drip dry in the shower. I carry Rick Steves’ clothes line but only used it once on the each of the last two trips. I keep thinking I should leave it home, but it weighs so little and is handy when I need it. I took laundry soap sheets, cut into small pieces instead of my usual container of Forever New. They saved weight but did not clean as well in tepid water. I use a nylon string backpack for a laundry bag. The zipped front pocket holds laundry supplies.

My clothes were coordinated using a black, gray and red. Since these clothes have been my travel go-to wardrobe for a few years, I’m tired of them. I’m changing to shades of blue with burgundy and pink accents for June/July 2025 England & Ireland trip. Oh no! I have to start the weight and size test packs all over again so everything on my new packing list fits into carry-on only.

Here’s my clothes packing list for Italy, includes what I wore on the plane:
• 3pr leggings – 2 black, 1 gray Spanx
• 4 long sleeve tunics/shirts – red plaid, sheer black with white polka dots, sheer black with color blocks, red sun shirt
• 3 short sleeve tunics – tone-on-tone black, black/white caftan, black with red flowers (last minute addition, bad choice, just don’t like)
• 1 set PJs – shorts and tank top
• 5 sets undies/socks – 4 sets would have been plenty
• 2pr cotton blend compression socks -- my legs love them, less foot swelling too.
• 1 black cashmere cardigan
• 1 red cotton knit open front cardigan -- layered good with the sweater but took 3 days to dry when washed
• 1 red plaid rain poncho, bought in Sorrento, goes on every trip
• 1pr maroon Ryka walking shoes – I bought a ½ size larger than I usually wear; had I not damaged my toes when I fell in Venice, they would have been perfect.
• 1pr silver Fitflop sandals
I bought:
• 1 sun hat in Venice – I thought I’d throw it away before coming home, but I like it and was able to cram the hat into my tote to haul home.
• 1 white “alpaca” scarf in Florence when the weather was cold and drizzly since I left my black scarf home.

I handle heat fairly well; it was over 110* when I left home. I don't handle humidity. It was hot and humid when I arrived in Venice, 90* with 65% humidity according to my phone app. By the time the Village Italy tour started, it was cooling. The higher elevations made the tour more comfortable. A couple times I regretted not packing a jacket. Underwear or lack of it, made a difference in tolerating the humidity. The red plaid tunic and tone-on-tone black are cut so I could go braless without hanging out much (small on top helped). Overall I was happy with what I packed.

I packed all of the above, except the hat, into one large packing cube (shirts) and two small packing cubes (leggings and undies). My sundry and personal items were packed in 5 RuMe nylon 3-pocket, zippered bags. 4 bags should be adequate next trip. The weight isn’t in the clothes but in all the accessories and supplies.

I took too many “what ifs”: a zipped supply pouch in my tote; too many Advil and other what-if drugs; too much make-up that I don’t wear; too many types of body lotion and sun screen; too many large bandages. I should have bought snack bars in Italy instead of packing them. I took a water bottle but it jumped out of my hand, broke the lid and was trashed. In all, I could have cut at least a pound, maybe two.

I like the hanging RS Classic toiletries bag with the hanging shower caddy since there was not a lot of counter space in the bathrooms. Solid shampoo dissolved in the shower but it’s one less thing to pack in my 311 bag. I usually don’t like hotel shampoos.

In town I carried an extra small red cross body Travelon purse and a small 2oz. packable souvenir nylon tote bag to hold water bottle, purchases and maybe the sweater. I also took an Eddie Bauer packable day pack to use on day trips and bus days. If I use it every day, my shoulders and neck hurt.

Well done Horsewoofie! I know what you mean about the solid shampoo. I wrap mine in saran wrap between washes which helps minimize disintegration.

Maybe I missed it but did you state the weight of your RS Rolling Carry-On and old RuMe 7oz tote? I recently returned from a week in Paris. My flights were direct from Chicago to CDG and returning from Paris to ORD. I received two notifications from Air France prior to my trip reminding me of the size limits for my personal item (tote bag) and carry-on (rollaboard) and the rules about liquids, knives, firearms, etc. and the weight limit for a checked piece of luggage. I did not check a bag although my ticket allowed 1 checked piece. I have flown within Europe and am aware that the size limits are smaller than in the US. I had no issues with taking my tote and rollaboard on my flight to Paris.
However, prior to the security check at CDG in Paris, travelers were required to place their personal item together with their rollaboard on a scale. They did not place the carry-ons in a frame to check for size. The combined weight of my rollaboard and tote was over 26 pounds. I was required to check my little rollaboard.
Upon arrival back in Chicago discussion among travelers during the hour-long wait at the baggage carousel was about all the unused overhead bins that were left empty.
Since my ticket allowed for checked luggage, I had no fee to pay to check my little rolled bag, but my arranged transfer from the airport to my residence required an hour longer wait for me to exit the airport.
I told the Air France representative in Paris that I did not want to wait in Chicago for checked luggage to be unloaded and asked what difference there is for my rollaboard to be in an overhead bin in the cabin rather than in the cargo hold.. The response was "Your ticket allows you to check your rollaboard for no fee." We were talking in circles.
So much for packing "carry-on" only to save time waiting at the baggage carousel. Air France has a different definition, based on combined weight. And yes - I did find the rule on the Air France web site. Lesson learned.

pj, sorry I forgot to state the weight and dimensions.
Packed, the RS Rolling Carry-on weighted 20 1/2 lbs. My challenge is to keep the depth at 9 inches, which I did this trip. My tote weighted 9 lbs; very squishable to fit under the seat. Weight was easy to lift into plane and train overheads. I pack a tape measure and luggage scale.
I flew United so had no weight restrictions for carry on. Although I could have checked a bag for free, I didn’t want to in either direction.
Last year’s experience with United delivering my suitcase home the next day was bad enough. Flying into Rome, I immediately was going to Venice.

Thank you, Horsewoofie! I do like packing lists and glad you were pleased with your choices!
My biggest challenge is when the airline has a combined weight limit that includes the personal item, along with the dimensions for each. I find it impossible without using a backpack.
I also posted separately about my experience with an almost two hour wait/process after a cascade of cancelled and rebooked flights after being forced to check my (met all requirements) carry- on bag. Even though it was delivered 24 hours later it reinforced for me, despite the packing challenge, the benefit of carry on.
Each trip we learn something new!

I too am always trying to pack better each trip. This past trip to Portugal the weather was supposed to be cooler so I brought 3 heavier weight tops, never wore them. Ugh. What I did bring and wore the most was a white man tailored sun protector shirt. (Don’t know what material it actually is). It never seemed to get dirty, never smelled or wrinkled. I wore it as a jacket in addition to a shirt. I purchased it at Costco. Went back for the same shirt in navy and black. These will replace my linen shirts.

The dreaded toiletries are always a problem. No matter how I try to downsize they seem to multiply.
We’re going in a short trip to Florida in 2 weeks and I am going to try again.

I’m sorry you fell horsewoofie! Nothing worse than getting hurt while traveling :(

I wish I liked wearing leggings better. They probably pack much easier than the jeans I prefer. I felt the same way about the sheet detergent. I didn’t use my squares I tore off after trying them once. Much prefer liquid.

Thanks for sharing! We tied on our poundage for the RS two wheel carry on. I was at 20.5 going over, too. Something about the dimensions, surface cover and build of that case is so much easier for me to manage.

Horsewoofie,
Shipping purchases home from Deruta is mandatory!! Only one purchase ever arrived broken and a replacement arrived in 24 hours! I always shop Ubaldo Degrazia in Deruta.
Looking forward to your trip report! Suki

Great job. I was surprised though by long sleeved tunics in August/September. Weren’t you too warm?

Thanks for the report. I appreciate the review of laundry detergent sheets. Kept seeing those mentioned and was tempted to try some for my winter RS tour, but will stick with my tried and true Forever New powder.

Barbara, is the shirt you mentioned from COSTCO an Eddie Bauer brand? I bought two of those on sale this summer and was wondering if they would make my pack list.

Very brave, Horsewoofie, going from black to navy :). I’m a black, grey and one color person myself for travel. But navy is tempting! I look forward to your VI report. We are booked for that in late summer of ‘25.

Thanks everyone for you nice comments.

BethFL, I try to cover up as much as possible. Several years ago I had melanoma removed from my arm. I go in yearly for a dermatologist check-ups.

Thanks for the great packing report! I always enjoy them, with the emphasis on the small things I learn, like about an Eddie Bauer men's shirt & Forever New Powder, which I will try. (The H was so disappointed by shower washing in Rome, he said he was really happy to get home, yikes, going to need to try to fix that! ) So sorry you fell, hope it didn't impact your trip too much?

I’m changing to shades of blue with burgundy and pink accents for June/July 2025 England & Ireland trip. THAT sounds marvelous.

2pr cotton blend compression socks - Do you happen to know what kind they are? I find them so uncomfortable, though I know they're good for me.

Sandancisco, I bought Vim&Vigor compression socks. The first pair was nylon and I didn’t like; hot and difficult to put on. They also make wool compression socks but I don’t wear wool.
I really like the cotton blend, 15-20 compression was just enough to keep the leg, ankle, foot swelling down, not hot. Only complaint is they are take two days to dry because cotton takes longer.

Glad it went well! No, shipping pottery definitely does not count, and you will be so excited when it arrives. I did that years ago and still enjoy what I purchased.

IIRC, the RS bag is new right? I love that bag! I took it to Iceland last month and my bag weighed it at 19.6 pounds. This bag fits into Icelandair's sizer, which is smaller than many others.

Mikliz97, the rolling carry-on is a replacement for the one with the broken handle. Nice to have a handle that retracts again. I love the bag but have to be careful packing because it’s really easy to overstuff it.

Horsewoofie--now I remember;) Mine is also a replacement, but it was well loved and just wore out. Yes, it is very easy to overstuff this one!

Regarding compression socks, I have a pair of pembrook that I purchased on Amazon. They are women's S/M, and even tho I have very robust calves, they fit great. They are 55%cotton, 40% polyester and 5% elastic. The toes and heel are a tiny bit bigger w no compression

Just catching up and yes, you know I love packing reports!

Your projected capsule colors for next year sound wonderful! You might need warmer clothes for England and Ireland...or not, lol.

I tried some new toiletry containers based on recommendations from one of my local meet up group pals. They are Kitsch. They worked great but somehow I think I mixed up the conditioner and shampoo because both were foaming all over the place in France, hahaha! On the last morning I finally just squeezed most of the remainder out and will start over again next time. At least I do know that the 3oz containers of each are more than I need for 4 weeks.

I'm also sorry you fell in Venice and banged up your toes. So hard to enjoy a big trip when your feet hurt!

Thanks so much for taking the time to post. I love reading about other's packing experiences.

Can't wait to ready your report of the VI tour. That was a favorite!

Kathy, great packing report! It sounds like everything worked well for the most part.

Where did you get your folding hangers? I'm thinking of bringing a few on my next trip, especially since I will have 2 extra kids along.

Shipping pottery home from Deruta isn’t cheating, is it?

Nope! I know you're kidding, but still... it's not. :-) I feel the same way about playing Spider Solitaire on my laptop. I often go back and change some of my moves in order to win a game. I don't see it as cheating because it only affects me (although it's possible others do). I actually think of it as strategy as it forces my brain to work a bit hard. ;-) But I digress...

Love the sun hat story! Good idea to bring it home! I bought a ballcap in northern England that is very flexible (the bill folds in half so you can pack it easily). Originally it was going to be just for travel, but I wear it every time I go out for a walk now.

Do you prefer a rain poncho over a rain jacket or coat? I go back and forth on that.

Pam, I’m really considering how many warm clothes I should pack next year. July in England may be only slightly warmer than Ireland and both will be cold in the evening. Anything less than 70* is cold!

Mardee, this Amazon link is similar to the clothes hangers I bought. I don’t think you need the ones with the clips; just fold the hanger over whatever you want to hang. https://www.amazon.com/Hslife-Portable-Colored-Folding-Clothes/dp/B07ZR4QYG7/ref=mp_s_a_1_20?crid=9PFAG6TVN2Y2&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.5Rsde9ikyWQoduiH5EE-97O26Wlzye3NxJvjoDojQMvqKZvB7IaGTAFwS2wlD0zusqrHrjh5-RSUXVMgYJ14jzkQLiaHJqSyDuoKv7of-7gXBinZaJjJD8WSiniNjviEEv2Od8Le1NrFNU0Dg2otYY71dwQGYmq2y6weLKOVACkNts0bibv3gkj55sATYWLOsQLGvGToc_GG6pDpfADPDg.fpvArmxMoruACzK8vNshJ2Mk8UT6lguzt4iEEtg-w3g&dib_tag=se&keywords=folding+hangers+for+traveling&qid=1730577741&sprefix=folding+hangers%2Caps%2C191&sr=8-20

Hey there, Thanks Horsewoofie, waiting for my Vim&Vigor compression socks to arrive. I'm hopeful....

I think you need to be ready to jump either way weather-wise. When I did Ireland in June 2014 we hit a warm spell and mostly never needed rain jackets. Back in the time of the dinosaurs....July 1976, hahaha....hit a heat wave in London and thought I'd roast although I lived in FL and only had FL weight clothing. I think this summer was pretty chilly so you are not really going to know for sure until the time. Still, better to be prepared for layering for chill since you've got heat covered!!

@Mardee, if you decide to come to one of our Coeur d’Alene meetings, I have plenty extras of those folding hangers. I have brought 1-2 on recent trips, and they are nice to use.
