Packing numerous capsule meds

Looking for suggestions on good space saving ways/containers to pack numerous daily capsule meds. I now have so many that they don't fit well into the standard daily travel pill cases. (Or I have to use about 3 cases for a 2 wk trip). I dont use/like the multi pocket hanging toiletry bags. Just throw them all in one ziplock bag???

Where are you going? Some countries have specific restrictions on medications so you will need to read up on that. Are they prescription medications? At a minimum you need to take a copy of your full prescription, and in some cases in the original bottle (again, depends on country). And as this is asked frequently, see if these responses help: https://search.ricksteves.com/?button=&date_range=2y&filter=Travel+Forum&query=packing+medications

Someone on here once suggested using the small snack size ziplocks and labeling each day with a sharpie, putting them all into a larger zip lock. Works well for me and it gets smaller as the trip goes on. I always have a photo of my prescriptions on my phone in case I somehow lose them. Do not ever put them in a checked bag! And it looks like Japan, China, Saudi Arabia and India are the countries that require the meds to be in original containers.

You could ask your pharmacist to prepare blister packs of your various meds by dosage and day. I had this done the first tine I traveled with multiple meds and it worked well. Comes in a weekly folder with copies of the labels for the various meds that fits easily to your cabin baggage. It goes without saying, don’t pack meds in checked baggage! And worthwhile taking an extra few days meds with you in case of unforeseen delays.

I take 6 pills with breakfast, 3 with dinner and 1 at bedtime, so pill sorters are not practical for me.
I use a set of Humangear Stax. I bought this 4-pack, but you can get different combinations to fit your various sizes of pills.

On my most recent trip, I packaged the pills I would need in transit in a couple of very small ziplock bags. I made these myself using some snack-size bags and my vacuum sealer. This worked well for me. I also use an Altoids Smalls tin to carry my dinner meds with me (along with some OTC pain relievers, just in case).

I use a one-week pill organizer, but the take whatever I need to fill it after the first week using small ziplocs like these. Then I print out the prescriptions from my online medical portal and print them at about 30% so I can cut and fold them to fit into the pouches - not that I have ever been stopped or had anything inspected, but at least the info is there. You can organize your meds however you want - by prescription, or by day, etc.

I used zip lock bags for supplements until the time I hadn't put all my travel stuff away and my little dog chewed into the bag and spilled the extra pills left. I think it was the possibility that he'd eaten ibuprofen that necessitated a stomach pumping...:( Now, I put supplements in a pill container or two. My prescriptions were already in a small pill container with an additional label for my second prescription.

I am having the same problem. I now take 14 daily prescription medication’s plus as needed ones. They are required medications. This is on top of inhalers and injections. I just did a mock up packing of our carry-ons. our trip is gonna be for three weeks so I’ll need a large quantity. My medication took up over half of the bag. We are flying Condor air to Greece . Someone mentioned to me that in the United States you could take an extra carry-on just for meds is that true and if so, does it work for international?

Robin I believe this varies by airline, so you'd need to consult the operator of your international flight to confirm. You might need to bring proof (like written prescription or note from a doctor) so be sure to ask what might be required.

I just counted. I am fortunate. I have 7 required and two as needed (9 total ... gwad dont you love age) and one injection. I had my pharmacist put them in small bottles which because of the pill size required 12 bottles for the 30 days I like to travel with (cause if i get stuck and run out I croak and 2 arent always available everywhere in Europe)

The bottles are a tad smaller than 1.25 x 3 inches each. The bottom of my personal item carryon is 5 x 11 meaning all my meds fit in a single layer at the bottom of my personal item to a depth of 1.25 inches. Even if I needed the larger diameter bottle it would only take another 1.25 inches in the bottom of my bag. My syringes and needles take no appreciable room. The 4 vials fit fine in the quart liquuds bag, but I'm a guy so there isn't much in that bag. I buy when I get to europe.

I like it this way because I am old school and many countries require that you bring thr meds in the original packaging and even if they dont check, i think its my showing respect to honor the rules of the host; and i am too lazy to look up which countries care and which dont.

I put each pill in a snack sized bag, put all of the daytime ones together in a quart bag with the pharmacy print outs for prescriptions

And made a similar bag for nights. I am able to fit my morning ones into a largish seven day pack at home and nights in a smaller one.....

I did not worry about documents for "calcium " "baby aspirin " etc. I think I kept my advil in it's original bottle. We got a pretty intense final check of our hand luggage before getting on turkish air to come home. And my hand labeled pill bags weren't an issue (or the two days worth in the 7 day pack with no label

One thing I'd do differently next time is to take exactly the same number of each pill . I was very Cavalier with the over the counter supplements, had three extra days of some, four of some, five of others, which did cause me a bit of anxiety when refilling the seven day carrier (sitting at the breakfast table in Turkiye because there was not an appropriate flat surface or adequate light in our hotel room)

I just pack all of my meds (7) in a single ziploc bag; I only want to manage and keep track of one bag, not seven. I keep a hard copy and a scanned copy of the prescription labels for proof. I can recognize and sort my various meds into a weekly tablet organizer as needed, just like at home. I've never seen the value in packing the original tablet bottles. IMO, the bottles prove nothing; one could easily pack illegal drugs into a prescription bottle.

I don't take the original bottles or a prescription but I do have a picture of the bottles in my phone(mostly to refer to at doctor visits). I think I would be more careful in Turkey now(in 2012 I had no problems with my meds there) but otherwise I will continue to bring my medicines to Europe in the daily containers. The types of meds that I have are the usual ones for my age, so nothing that is likely to be questioned.

Finding that contact lens cases work great. Easy to find, cheap, small, can get a two week supply into one. I have one for my vitamin A, one for my Eliquis, one for my diuretic (2 size pills), one for my sleep aids. An old small pill bottle can take my Tylenol supply. I leave my Vyndamax in its sleeve in the box, along with a serious cough pill - I developed horrendous deep coughs 3 of the last 4 trips, likely started by the low air pressure on the airplane combined with my inability to pump a lot of blood. So far not needed this trip. And the lens cases all fit into that same box.

If you want the highest assurance of quickly and cheaply getting replacements bring copies of the prescriptions and the clinical note from your last visit with the doctor. Better if you can get someone to sign them.

A friend just sent this meme to me: "They say we'll travel more when we retire, but what they meant was traveling back and forth to the doctor's office."

I use a combination of two options: Either mini ziplock bags or mini bottles (both come in a variety of sizes) from amazon because the bags pack flat and take almost no more room than the pills themselves or the bottles are hard sided and protect the pills from crushing. I will cut the label off the box for OTC meds and slide it into the ziploc bag or something similar for prescription meds. The only one I keep in original container from pharmacist is stimulant ADHD meds for kid. Though it sounds like I could ask for a label from Rx that I could slap on another container.
