Packing Light for a Christmas Markets Trip

During CWsocial’s Zoom meeting this morning on Christmas Markets, we talked about packing as one of several topics. I offered to write up the details of what I brought last year for a 2-week trip to enable carry on plus being able to bring home 9 Christmas mugs, etc., so here is the list. This is what worked very well for me, and I will be packing the same for a 3-week Christmas Markets trip. Taking several trains is a large motivation for packing in this matter. My next trip will have 11 cities. : )

I brought my 2-wheel Eddie Bauer Expedition carry on, plus a sturdy empty backpack. Returning home, I still had some leftover room.

Specifically because this trip was traveling for Christmas Markets:
- A roll of bubblewrap - approximately 12” by 8” diameter. Very, very helpful!
- Kamik waterproof winter boots w/ inserts. My feet were never cold, and these were extremely comfortable for lots of standing & walking. (Our first two cities were cold, especially at night!)
- Women's Apres Arson II Winter Long Down Jacket. Loved this toasty silver coat with a cute hood.
- Gloves & hat. (Didn’t want a scarf & only wore the hat in the coldest cities.)
- Purse was a very small LeSportsac crossbody worn under my coat. Pretty much just my phone, reading glasses & some cash inside it.
- A shopping bag made of ripstop that rolls up into a ball.

Clothes, including worn on plane:
- Four 32 Degree long sleeve microthin scoop neck tops.
- One long sleeve quality weight t-shirt
- Two pairs of stretch waistband pants
- One 32 Degree under-layer pant
- Underwear & wool socks.
- Nightgown
- Two necklaces - one scarf for possible concerts/ nice restaurants.

Other items per normal packing light travel:
- Regular very lightweight toiletry kit & supplies
- IPad & itinerary papers
- Tom Bihn bedside travel tray with extra reading glasses, etc.
- Money belt worn at all times with passport, ATM & cc, and larger cash.
- Coffee sticks & individual nuts pkgs - protein & caffeine when needed.
- Purell individual sanitizer packs for trains, eating, etc.

Comments:

  • Almost every photo we liked were ones we were wearing our coats outdoors. If you want to change it up, buy a different cute hat at a market.
  • I typically wore 1-2 of the 32 Degree tops together each day with a cute necklace. I have complementary colors of them on purpose to double-layer & peek out secondary color. They dry very quickly overnight after sink-washing! When it was cold, I added the t-shirt or wore it separately.
  • I did not bring a second pair of something for my feet, and I was fine.
  • I did buy Euros before leaving for the trip, and I used almost all of them at the markets for food, items, etc.
  • We brought chemical hand & feet warmers. My daughter used the hand ones; I didn’t use either.
  • She brought a pair of sneakers in her carry on & used my bubble wrap, otherwise, we were very similar.

I'm looking in my closet at the first draft of tops for my upcoming trip to the Alps... in September. And comparing to your list.... four plus one tops, eh? I have some work to do for my second draft!! smh

I don't understand the quality weight t-shirt. Can you help me understand what that is and how it got invited to the trip in addition to the four 32 degree layering tops?

I agree with you about winter travel. You wear your coat everyday so no one, or your pictures, see that you are wearing the same top or sweater. And let’s face it, you don’t sweat in the winter like you do in the warmer months.
We’ll be going to Paris in February for 2 weeks and I don’t plan on bringing more than a carry on.

I wanted something cotton & comfortable for sleeping on the plane, along with my wonderful coat as “my blanket”. (I seriously slept 5 hours on the plane in Comfort Economy seats with that coat as a snuggly blanket!). Usually I am wearing a pretty top because that will be seen in Spring/Summer photos, but for this trip I wanted something I could later on layer with the 32 Degree tops if needed. A sweater would be too hot with this fantastic coat. The long sleeve I brought is a heavier quality-cotton t-shirt that’s not tight, so I can easily layer under it.

That makes sense, thanks!

This won't be a carry on trip, but I still need to edit way down from my first draft of "every quality layer I own!!"

I got a few Uniqlo base layer shirts in France earlier this year and will probably layer them with long sleeved wool shirts rather than cotton, but otherwise my list will be similar to yours. Seeing you put on your coat during the meeting somehow triggered my memory of a ski jacket I haven’t worn in years that is waterproof and has an optional zip in fleece jacket inside. I pulled it out, tried it on and sure enough it will work perfectly for my northern Italy December trip!

We plan on doing a Christmas market trip in the future but as of yet have only traveled to Europe in warmer weather. What clothes did you wear on the plane that were not in your carryon? What was the weight of your carryon and also your personal item when leaving for your trip? Thank you.

Your post is a good reminder for me since we are headed to Vienna and Budapest in mid November for the markets. I am a light packer, and last time we did the markets I had plenty of room for around 7 or so mugs. I did not bring any bubble wrap, but will this time, based on your suggestion. Of course the only mug that broke was the one I liked the most.

I too am perfectly fine with only one pair of footwear. I take these boots with me on any winter trip to Europe (minus Iceland). I bought these over 10 years ago and bought them the day before a 2 week trip to Europe, and I wore them every day except one, they were so comfy, and still are. I love that they are fleece lined and have the zipper for the inside ankle, so easy on and off. I have the red, but will probably buy a more muted color for this next trip.

I do take a scarf and wear it often. My gloves are my favorite waterproof Marmot ones that I have had for probably 20 years as I know they will keep me warm and dry.

I did learn a lesson on our last trip to Iceland. Bring a backup pair of readers. Granted, Vienna and Budapest would be much easier to buy another pair, but when you need to see you don't want to wait. On that last trip I had to wait a few hours to get to a place that had them, and I had one choice, black or leopard print;)

On that last market trip, I did not think ahead and bring an extra bag for purchases. I am not sure why I forgot that, but all of us did and we all ended up buying the Longchamp expandable travel duffel bag. Normally I can squeeze in any purchases into my regular bag, but we bought things like charcuterie boards, Birkenstocks, etc so ran out of room quickly. This time I know to bring an extra bag, but it will probably be my really lightweight LeSportsac large weekender bag, which weighs #1.
