Packing for England in October

We recently returned from our holiday in York, Hexham (for Hadrian's Wall), Oxford and London. Thought I'd share my packing list in hopes it might be useful to someone. I decided what to take based on historical weather info and past experiences. I wore everything repeatedly and washed twice at our apartments. My color palate was black, grey, white and pink. I wore some of this stuff on the plane. Pants, turtlenecks and sweaters are Land's End.

2 pair black jeans (Wear one, wash one. They dry quickly on heated towel racks.)
4 lightweight (layering) turtlenecks
1 grey cotton cardigan
1 pink crewneck cotton pullover sweater
2 underwear (wear one, wash one Ex-Officio brand)
2 bras (ditto on Ex-Officio)
1 compression socks
1 wool socks (socks were also in the wear one, wash one inventory)
1 slipper socks from hospital to wear as slippers in apartments/hotels. Tossed before heading home.
Coldwater Creek knee-length raincoat with button-out wool lining
Hat and gloves (especially happy to have these at the Wall and a couple of mornings in York; but didn't use them elsewhere)
1 set Cuddle Duds thermals (also wore these as pj's, borrowing one of my husband's t shirts if it was too warm for the thermal top)
Ecco walking shoes
Basic toiletries (sunscreen, moisturizer, ibuprofen, polysporin, bandaids, etc) - first stop in York was Boots for toothpaste, etc
Spare glasses
Cross-body travel day bag/purse with lots of pockets (eBags)
Lysol wipes for tray table, apartments and hotel rooms upon arrival
Travel umbrella (which was used only once, taking it needs reevaluation)

In my personal item (a messenger bag), my biggest problems (in terms of bulk and weight) are medications and disposable contact lenses. Both decrease over time but start heavy. I carry broken-down guide books because we like to have them with us each day when touring; I'm never happy carrying my heavy iPad around. I am still, sadly, largely wedded to paper for tickets, reservations, and confirmations, which also decrease over time. Phone, iPad and cords were also in the bag of course. All in all, I was happy with the list, although it will be a while before I wear any of it again.

Thanks so much for sharing your list. I leave in 2 weeks for England. I adhere to the following advice: put the clothing out on the bed to make sure all pieces mix and match, then put about half of them back in the closet.

One of the perks of traveling in winter is that clothes can be worn multiple days without laundering. After reading your list, I culled even more items, making more room for goodies to bring home with me.

Being an Arizona girl for the last few years, I rarely wear any of these clothes anymore, so I had to refer back to my Seattle days to remember what worked for me - layers.

Your light packing here is really impressive and this post will really help a lot of people. I would have to have another pair of pants(flannel-lined), only 4 tops, 3 each socks and panties and an extra pair of shoes in case something happens to the pair I'm wearing(this has never happened on a trip, but has happened twice to the soles of my shoes when I was walking at home). I would take a hooded jacket to layer under a hooded waterproof rain jacket-it sounds like that raincoat would take up a lot of space. I like silk long underwear because it takes up little space in luggage and under clothes.

Yes, my raincoat would have easily filled half my suitcase, but luckily, I guess, I wore it all the time. I did button out the lining for a few days, though. My husband swears by his silk underwear which he has loved since his Alaska days. In the summer, I usually take a second pair of shoes, sandals, but since my Eccos only had one trip on them, I decided to risk it. Turned out ok. My lightweight polar fleece jacket found its way into the "not this trip" pile in favor of the pink sweater. In the end, I was glad to have the pink one, as it helped to brighten up my look a bit. I learn a lot here, so I wanted to pay it forward. Glad my list helps.

Very impressed, Wanderlust! You really do pare your clothes down! I can never make myself go true: wash one wear one. I travel with 4 undies and 3 pairs socks and 2 pairs of shoes. I have noticed that my feet are happier trading off shoes every 2nd or 3rd day however. That must not be an issue with you. I also bring a separate sleep shirt and bottom. Did you weigh your suitcase? It must have been light. And what bag do you carry, by the way?

And, alas getting the personal item down is always the hardest. I did switch to an iPad mini a couple of trips ago and can tell a difference. It’s almost 1/2 the weight.

I too like my almost knee length raincoat with removable liner. My liner can go easily into the front pocket of my carryon. My raincoat has a hood that is also removable, and I never bring an umbrella.

I admire you for being able to do wear one/wash one for socks and undies (and pants!). I just can't !

Thanks for sharing your list, always love these.

I didn't weigh my suitcase, sorry. I travel with the Amazon Basics hardside carry-on with the 4 spinner wheels, 21". Not at all glamorous, but it does the job. Yes, I'm lucky about the shoes. I can wear the same ones every day without a problem. In the summer, when the clothes aren't as bulky, I wear sketchers and add the sandals for a little variety. Next time I need to replace my iPad, I'll probably go back to the mini. If I remember correctly, I got the bigger one on sale so it wasn't much more at all from the mini. I prefer it for reading, but it seems to get a bit heavier each trip.
