Packing advice for nine month old, traveling to Switzerland

Hello Everyone,
My husband and I will be traveling with our nine month old to Switzerland in a couple of weeks. I have been doing a lot of research on what to pack in the carry-on for our son, but I was wondering if anyone had any advice for must have essentials. I have also read TSA requirements for babies on their website. I am a little worried about how to go about bringing his food and formula through security. Anyone have any experience with this? Also, do we need to bring a copy of his birth certificate even though he has a passport? Thank you for all advice and suggestions!

This TSA site has some information on traveling with children, is this what you read? You will not have a problem bring food or formula as long as it is "reasonable quantities" and tell them up front that you have it. That does not mean they won't do some extra testing. If you already read this, why are you worried? Many people with children travel through airports every day and they know you need extra supplies.

You will not need a birth certificate if he has his passport. If you and your husband (assuming that is his father) were traveling separately you would need a notarized letter saying that it was okay to travel with your child without the other parent.

When I brought baby food I just pulled it out of my bag and told security. No issues. I now take a liquid medication and do the same thing. If your formula is powder, not pre-mixed liquid you will have no trouble at all. Liquid you would need to take out of your suitcase and tell security. Same for baby food that is liquid-ish like the jars of puréed fruits or vegetables. Solid food like cereal or crackers is permitted, no need to announce it.

Birth certificate is not needed but if you are concerned then bring a copy. A passport is absolutely required no mattter the age. If your child were traveling with only one parent then you'd need documentation of some sort.

Thank you, Ladies. I had read that information from TSA. I was only concerned because I had read a few complaints from people on travel blogs as to how baby food was handled. We use formula, and will have it in powdered form in a portioned container. We plan on buying bottled water after we get through security. We also plan on bringing food in pouches for easier travel. Does anyone have any suggestions on essentials for the baby while on the plane? I have bought him noise-free toys, and will have extra diapers, wipes, and clothes. We are bringing his baby carrier and a blanket for him. Is there anything that someone missed while flying that they recommend for our trip?

Thank you! :)

Please have his doctor check him before the trip so that you don't have any ear issues. Nothing is as difficult to listen to as over tired children that have an ear issue when landing. It is normal, but children under a year just seem to need to cry when feeling bad. (I traveled with my small children from the midwest to asia 2X/ year...)
You'll probably bring more things than he needs to occupy him on the trip. I did on our first trip, but mine were a bit older. One thing that I read that can occupy them for a long time is a roll of tape. Take a good amount out and let them just play with it, wad it up, move it from hand to hand, etc. Bring whatever he likes to play with for a long time. My kids loved being read to and I don't think anyone would complain if you had a few books and read them to him... I've actually seen some great kids interactive books on my kindle... but please read them to him, don't just give him the device. (just my opinion)
Bring the disinfecting wipes and wipe down every surface you and he will touch once on the plane.
Good luck and happy travels.

The ears! Be sure you have a bottle for him to suck during take off, and even more so during landing, to pop his poor little adorable ears.

Give no quarter! Nine months old is not an excuse. Make him schlep all his own kit in a backpack.

Just to add my five cents worth - we travelled with our daughters from Ontario to BC when they were quite young - my youngest was about 5 (first time in a plane). When we were taking off we could not figure out why she was crying so much and holding her ears - we never heard of little ones have problems with their ear canals during take off and landing. It was awful - she was in so much pain and we were all very stressed and beyond ourselves. She eventually stopped but not for quite some time.

A wonderful air stewardess came by and provided us with two plastic drinking glasses and told us to put the glasses over her ears during the landing and voila - no pain - no discomfort . I could not believe it. From that time on we always requested the plastic glasses before take off and kept them for the land as well on future flights. Eventually we did take her to he doctors and the prescribed us a decongestant medicine (over the counter) to take a few hours before the flight. This also solved the problem and the glasses were not needed but the medicine did make her groggy and sleep most of the flight (which may not have been a bad thing either on those long flights) lol.

I would suggest asking for the glasses just in case and make a game out of it.

We recently traveled with our two year old to Ireland. We brought a copy of his birth certificate but never needed it. Though I like to pack light, I brought way more diapers and snack than I thought we'd need, in case of a delay. The applesauce pouches were not a problem, though be prepared to have them in a 3-1-1 bag just in case. Our airline (Virgin Atlantic) had special meals for order, including baby meals. We ordered a kids meal which was a nice perk. I like to bring our portable changing pad when we travel, since it covers up the changing table and also holds diapers and wipes (it is Skiphop brand). Happy travels!

Our oldest was 14 months old the first time she flew to Hawaii. My second was 7 months and they have been flying ever since. Rick says don't pack for the worst case scenario, pack for the best case scenario. When traveling with kids reverse this phrase. It is best to take what you need. You will be much happier. Definitely take extra diapers, food, etc.
