Packable snacks

We’re going to Morocco and I know that in addition to a long day of air travel there will be times I’d like to pull some protein out of my bag when we’re a ways from food. What are your favorite snacks for sustenance to bring from home?

We often carry a block of peanut butter/crackers. Also been known to carry a jar of peanut butter and a box of Ritz crackers. Worth their weight in gold when you're hungry and meals are too heavy and expensive. We also like orange slices and lemon drops.
Box of cereal's not bad if it's one of the sugary, delicious kinds to eat dry.

The obvious are some type of granola bar which are easy to pack, small, and filling. I always pack individually wrapped prunes. They are high in fiber and 2 satisfies me and keeps me okay for a few hours. In addition, they are very small and easy to carry. My travel buddies would always give me a horrified look when i offered one, but after an hour or so were asking for one. Many of my friends bring them along now. Also, my sister alway had a, hhmm, problem when travelling before, she doesn’t any longer.

I use nuts or a mixture of nuts and dried fruit as carry-around snacks. I don't take them from home; both are readily available in Europe. Never went inside a food store in Morocco, but I remember seeing some sort of nuts for sale at open-air markets.

Just be aware a jar of peanut butter will be confiscated by USA TSA agents if you try yo bring it in your carry-on. I saw it happen at PDX.

Walmart or your favorite grocery store has a ton of protein, granola or other snack bars available.

Please make sure to have an alternative snack too. If you take only snacks with peanuts or peanut butter, you may not be able to eat it/them. One time, on my BA flight, it was announced that no peanuts would be served due to a passenger's allergy. They also directed passengers to not open any (personal) peanut-laced cookies or snack products.

Costco Kirkland brand protein bars, individual bags of cashews, almonds, or peanuts. I also like a bit of sugar sometimes, so I pack a “theater box” of non-chocolate hard candy.

I get the individual foil packets of Justin's chocolate hazelnut butter or their plain peanut butter. It has to go into your 3-1-1 bag. I also carry a small jar of peanut butter in my checked luggage. When I leave from home I have a couple of bagels in a zip lock and they will carry me thru for 24 hours or so with the nut butters.

I pick up dried fruit, nuts and crackers along the way. There may be a restriction on importing fruit to Morocco so check on that before you bring dried fruit in. I'd think it would be OK but it's better to check on the official Morocco government page for import.

Do you have a layover along the way? If so, I'd plan to grab a bite there if you have time.

I usually bring granola bars and cashews. I pack some granola bars in my carryon and a few in my regular bag to have on hand later. M & Ms are good, too.

for the plane my "snack bag" contains individual packs of cashews and almonds, a couple of protein bars, a small baggie of mixed dried fruit and a couple of small babybel cheeses and a small packet of crackers.
Since protein bars are pretty easy to find I usually don't pack any and just get them when I get to my destination. Since protein bars may not be quite as easy to find in Morocco, I'd allocate a bit of space in my bag for some! When in Morocco, you shouldn't have any trouble finding both fresh and dried fruit as well as nuts - just remember to bring extra ziploc bags!

Its the protein part of your question that's got me stumped (besides peanut butter). Otherwise the nerds' favorite - Pop Tarts - are a handy snack.

I think prunes are best avoided when in transit.

How about some hummus?
It's protein, and a small container might be alright?
I always take those little prepacked boxes with a tiny tin of tuna, some crackers, a spreader, and a napkin.
You get them in the aisle selling tuna at the grocery store.
They're all sealed up, and I've never had them removed from my carryon bag .
They also have ones with tins of hummus.
Saved me a few times !

Hummus falls into the category that it needs to go into the 3-1-1- liquids pouch and be in containers of 3OZ or smaller. You can freeze it and it will go thru TSA as a solid. However, I'd not want it to be un-refrigerated after more than about 2 hours or so. The frozen freezer packs are OK thru TSA as long as they are still solidly frozen and are not gel texture.

I did test some dehydrated hummus today that was pretty good. Previously the ones I tried were either tasteless or gritty or a combo of both. This had nice spices added and was smooth after adding water. So...dehydrated hummus is a possibility.

I had not remembered this when I posted before but there is a product called PB2 that is dehydrated peanut butter. It's not too bad but the product in the foil packets is better.

A good brand of Beef Jerky or chicken jerky. Example: bridgeford, Oberto, etc.. Avoid: Jack Links.
Peanut M&MS, cookies, etc..

I took powdered peanut butter for a trip to Rome. The convent guest house where we stayed offered a simple breakfast of bread, fruit, and coffee. We mixed some peanut butter (with a bit of water) every morning to put on the bread. That product is now available at Costco and many grocery markets.

Note: I was traveling with my teen son who is NOT allergic to peanuts. My other son is severely allergic to peanuts, so we can’t use this protein source when he travels with us. I would never ever mix this on the plane (or without checking with guests near our table)—the powdered elements are especially dangerous for those with allergies, because they are easily airborne.

Almonds are the best to tide over the I’m hungry feelings. And rake up no room.

I'll second the Justin's packets. They lie pretty flat, so you could easily throw 1-2 in the 311 bag. My favorite is Maple Almond butter.

Thanks everyone! Justin’s peanut butter, protein bars and turkey jerky are the winners for me. I appreciate the feedback!
