October: 21 Day Best of Europe

We'll be taking the RS 21 Day Best of Europe tour this October.

Given our "pack light" experience, I'm still uncertain about how to back for Europe in October (10-12 to 11-1). Our northernmost city is Amsterdam; our southernmost, Rome.

I'm especially concerned about outerwear and also shoes.

Thanks!

Nothing incredibly heavy will be required. Down is always good as it packs small. But the secret is maybe 3 fairly light layers that can be worn one at a time or all together for the rare cold night.

I like to travel in the shoulder seasons. I bring a very lightweight waterproof raincoat. Mine weighs just over 11oz. and packs into it's own pocket. I also bring either a packable down vest or jacket. Again, lightweight and packs small. I also bring a pair of gloves liners. That usually is enough for the morning chill. And a non bulky knit cap.

Monitor the weather forecasts just before departure. If colder weather is expected, add a scarf and upgrade to regular gloves.

With a layered approach to the rest of my wardrobe I'm good from the upper 30s to 80s.
