The Travel Goods Association put out the following press release:
Trump Announces 10% Punitive Tariffs on U.S. Imports of Travel Goods from China, Which Will Rise to 25% on January 1
Tariffs Effective September 24(Princeton, NJ) – September 17, 2018 - Michele Marini Pittenger, President of the Travel Goods Association (TGA) expressed deep disappointment with President Trump's decision today to move forward with a 10% tariff on all U.S. imports of travel goods – luggage, backpacks, handbags, totes, computer cases, briefcases, and other travel accessories – from China, which will escalate to 25% on January 1, 2019. The U.S. travel goods industry is mostly comprised of small and medium-sized businesses and specialty stores that together employ 100,000 American workers. Today, 84% of all travel goods sold in the United States are imported from China.
"There is no other way to put it, President Trump just imposed a huge new tax on every American consumer, on the items they carry and travel with every day," said Pittenger. During the public review process, "TGA, and dozens of our members, testified or submitted written comments opposing the punitive tariffs, with most saying the tariffs represent an existential threat to the very future of their companies, regardless of whether tariffs were 10% or 25%," continued Pittenger. "A 10% tariff, which escalates in only three months to 25%, will take a huge toll on our industry. The unprecendented speed with which these new tariffs will be imposed, in less than a week on September 24, adds further insult to injury by giving our industry no time to adjust. By ignoring our pleas, and imposing the duties so quickly, the Trump administration demonstrates a complete lack of respect and a blatant disregard for our industry, the 100,000 American workers we employ, and the hardworking American families that use our products every day for school, work, and travel."**
I did not post this to start arguing for or against Trump. I just thought travelers here should be aware. It's been reported that Samsonite has sent letters to its retailers telling them of expected price increases. Will others follow?
