Happy holidays and happy and safe traveling!
For other minimalist, packing cube and carry- on only travelers, I' ve just received these ( new to me):
https://easypackpro.com/en-us/products/travel-compression-cube
As I start to pack, they do seem to compress quite a bit. Certainly way more than my old assortment. (I always have used an actual compression plastic bag for accumulating laundry but those create a mass of wrinkles when sealed.)
Anyway, I ordered this set of 4, they seem very well constructed (the second zipper has to be strong for it to work as intended).
I still will have to keep overall weight in mind for my international flights, but my intent wasn't to bring more stuff! Shipping took a few weeks, but not sure if that's always the case.
Happy packing :)
I hadn't seen those compression cubes so thanks for the link. I'd love it if you came back and let us know how they work.
It annoys me when a website doesn't have the individual weights of components. I see the 4-pack weighs under 20 oz but it would be helpful to know how much each cube weighs on it's own. I use a variety of compression and non-compression cubes from Eagle Creek. I stopped putting my underwear/socks/pjs in one because they did fine in a small non-compression cube and the extra zipper added a bit more weight. Yes, I am one that packs with a digital kitchen scale next to my packing table, lol.
If you are traveling soon...have a wonderful time!
Thank you, Pam! My scale has a little hook from which you hang the items, so not nearly as useful as a kitchen scale. since if something is too light it doesn't register.
The biggest one in the set is really big. With a suitcase it would likely work better, and be useful for a couple big sweaters, maybe, but each of the other 3 sizes I used created pretty solid "blocks" when compressed for a backpack, which is what I want to use this trip.
I did get it all in for my initial trial pack! I'm going to keep all my things in there ( trips in 2 weeks) and see how it goes for wrinkles :)
Excellent! Thanks for the feedback.
I was wondering if the biggest size was too big. I use a large one on trips where I am doing lots of outdoor activities (Orkney and Shetland for instance, lol) and "package" up my rain jacket, puffy vest, lightweight gloves and hat in the compression cube and then just keep that in my day pack.
Hope your wrinkles fall out when you get to your destination! I also carry a small empty spray bottle that I can use to spray down shirts and shake the wrinkles out.
If you need a faster option, Amazon has a number of brands of compression packing cubes. I've been very happy with mine. I found rolling two items together helped some with wrinkles.
I was wondering if the biggest size was too big.
I use my largest cube for laundry. Dirty clothes go in. Then off to the laundry when needed during my multi-week trips.
I have saved your link as well. Thanks! I have 2 sets of Eagle Creek - one compression and one not, and for me the compression works well. So my non- compression set isn’t as useful. Plus I am a sucker for things that come in blue.
I have a set of compression cubes. I really have liked using them. I've had to be careful about what fabrics I bring or how I roll them to avoid massive wrinkles.
I bought a set for my DIL who travels a lot for work. She had asked for a regular set, and I decided to get her compression rationalizing that if she didn't like the compression feature they still can be used without using the compressing. She says she loves having the option and during her trips if she does any repacking, she often will change what is in each sized bag and compress or not based on her needs.
Happy new year! As I fiddle with these I see pros and cons.
Biggest pro is that they are a hybrid of traditional packing cubes (I have RS, Away and some random others, all really old, made of mesh) and traditional plastic compression storage bags with a slider that become a very flat very wrinkled pancake.
These new ones seem to work best only when fully loaded or it defeats their purpose and they just become a heavier packing cube. When zippered closed (and I have it so full I kneeled on it to get the last 4" zipped!) it becomes like a rigid brick!
If you have a bag where you can Tetris the "bricks" in place these would work really well. In my case, trying to use a 35 liter backpack, their rigidity is an obstacle I'm still working on. I have some items flat on the bottom not in a cube, folded up and over the two I can fit.
I still like regular compression bags better for laundry because they get so flat. I keep it folded in half in the bottom of my bag and if something becomes laundry just slide it in-between the layers until I accumulate enough for a flattening session!
