medication carrying question

Hi everyone,
this isn't really a big issue but just wanted to ask this. I am leaving for Spain next Friday so I am getting things ready now. I take a blood pressure pill that is in a blister pack but I just take half a pill so when I am home I cut a weeks worth in half with a pill cutter and put them in a pill case. I don't really want to take the whole blister pack of pills with me just in case somehow it gets lost, that is a months worth of pills lost, plus then I have to bring a pill cutter with me. It's light enough but I don't want to bring anything extra I don't have to and I don't want to be splitting pills on vacation lol. So I would like to just bring the 10 days worth which will only be the 5 pills cut in half. I haven't had any issues traveling before with any medication but I haven't traveled before with any pills cut in half. Last year when I traveled, I took a whole pill so they were intact. Does anyone think this will be an issue? I really never had any trouble in the past except just once going through CDG in Paris. I had a pill in a blister pack for migraines and they made me remove it and tell them what it was for but nothing since that time. Thanks, Margaret

In many trips to Europe, not a single official has ever revealed any interest whatsoever regarding over the counter or prescription drugs in my possession.

Thank you Bruce. I only had that one time in Paris but not once since then. Thanks again!

Just remember to bring a copy of the prescription with you in case you get separated from your pills. I admit it is probably a very remote chance, but you may want to consider it. Just in case. Also if you get asked you have the name of the drug with you.

I have gone to Europe nine times and have not been questioned, however, I always leave prescriptions in their original bottle as I don't want any chance of their being an issue.

Maybe the pharmacy will give me a plastic bottle with the label on it so I don't have an issue. Thanks Barbara!

I know you didn't ask this...but I'll input anyway. Think about taking a few extra days of pills as bad weather occurs, planes get cancelled, etc. That way you don't have to panic if there is a delay...because you don't have your medicine or one fell into the sink drain, etc. Otherwise, just carry them the way you want as you describe above.

I know you don't want to take anything you don't have too. We are the same way. But here is a thought. If you are traveling with someone else, have them take a supply of BP pills in case something happens to your main supply. If traveling by yourself, keep the main supply in your carry on and a back up supply elsewhere. Just a thought. Unlikely anything will happen to the main supply, but Murphy's law does happen now and again. This is what we do to save space & weight. Have the pharmacist print out extra labels. Put the pills in a freezer zip lock and put the extra label on it. Take the original data sheet that comes with the RX with you to show that it is for you. We have been to many European countries and have never had a problem. There are some state laws that require prescription meds to be in original containers, but they are rarely enforced and I can only remember reading about one case in the last 20 years. We've also never had anyone question our prescription meds. I

Wray and TC,
Thank you! That is excellent advice! I always carry my meds in my carry on bag but honestly I always just brought the exact amount. I am lucky nothing happened but I need to remember Murphy's Law LOL. I will bring a few days extra just in case. Thank you both! Margaret

I carry prescription and OTC meds in little zip top bags designed to hold pills. Sometimes I'll pull the label off the bottle and stick to the plastic bag, but usually I just write the generic name of the medication and the strength on the bag. Never had a single question.

The bags I use are like these: Pill Pouches

Yes Celeste, I believe I have seen them as well, that's a great idea as well. Thank you!

Margaret, my pharmacy puts all prescriptions in huge bottles, which I certainly don't want to be traveling with. I've purchased, at minimal cost, some very small pill bottles from an independent pharmacy. I ask my pharmacy to print out an extra label for each of my prescriptions and I put them on the small bottles, so I can take just the amount I need. You might do that for your split pills.

Thank you Nancy! That is a great idea too and I can't imagine a pharmacy having an issue with printing up an extra label! Take care, Margaret

I also ask my pharmacist to print out extra labels but instead of putting the pills in plastic bottles, I put them in small ziploc bags. Less weight and they take up less room.

Just have the pharmacist tell you the generic name for the drug. Brand names may not be the same from country to country.

Hi,

No issue at all. No one has ever asked. Obviously, "they" see the amount I need to bring considering the duration of the trip, be it 10 days or 9 weeks, when the prescription pills go through the scanner. They are packed in my carry-on sack or on my person until I get to the hotel.

I print a copy of my prescriptions (has both common & drug name, in case you need a refill) from my hospitals web sight. Easy to fake but looks a little more official. I also take a picture of the bottles & the labels, that way, it is less paper but I can show someone if asked. I have never been asked.

I have a critical medicine I take.
I always bring my primary supply in my purse/carryon..
However,

I ALWAYS put a few days supply in my luggage too.. worst case scenario.. I get purse snatched or lose my carry on.. I still have the luggage stash.. Of course I have never had that happen, but I cant afford to go even a day without my medicine.. so even carrying an extra prescription I might still be screwed .. not every town has 24 hr pharmacists.. and some don't even have drug stores..

I take 3+ months' supply of various meds, no one has ever asked. Good idea to split the stash!

No problems, but having been "pulled up" in London for a search in 2013 included our medications. Simply having a doctors letter for whatever you have to take is good practice. Also, not all medications are over the counter in all countries.
