Can someone tell me when traveling Lufthansa if the dimenstions for the personal carry on can be a combination of the dimensions. Lufthansa's website states 16" X 12" X 4" for the personal item, i.e. purse, backpack, shopping bag. Can it by 14"X12"6"? Not sure about anyone else, but finding it hard for the 4" thickness for a backpack...

I have never seen them check personal carry on bag size on a Lufthansa flight.

Well I just found a bag which fits Lufthansa’S personal item dimensions. I saw it at REI this morning when I walked through looking for something else. It’s the Topo Designs briefcase. Oh and yes, I’ve seen Lufthansa agents require folks check otherwise carryon compliant rollaboards when the personal items were too big.

I've seen them check too. But that's not the point. You agreed to follow the rules when buying the tickets. I found a bag on Amazon that was the right size. Think it was about $20. I had to look at hundreds pages and read hundreds of size descriptions to find it.
