Lightweight dress

Headed to Japan in late May/early June. I am looking for a lightweight short-sleeve (not sleeveless) dress that is NOT form fitting. (At 58 I like a short sleeve where I can add a sweater or wrap if it’s chilly). Any recommendations are welcome!

Might check out what Landsend has. Good sales this weekend. Most are made from cotton knit.

I bought one at Talbots last spring. It was casual and cute and had secret pockets.. .
I wore it often last summer..

How short? I like dresses better than shorts or pants lately and plan on wearing those on my next trip. Since it’s a little early for the department stores to stock them yet, I’ve been scouring the internet.

I’ve looked all over, but am actually finding the most on Amazon. I bought this dress and it’s nice and flattering. I’m 60, 5’8” and it hits me right below the knees, not a flattering length on my body shape (longer torso, shorter legs), so I might have it hemmed. I think before I do, I’ll order the 2nd link. Same company, same material, but shorter with
Slightly different styling. Look at the customer pictures to see all body types wearing this dress, even pregnant women, tiny women, large and small bust.

I also have this on order. Sometimes these dresses are actually a bit longer than on the model. I think it’s youthful And pretty. I ordered the medium at 36.61 inches, so we’ll see.

I'm looking for dresses that pack well. What type of material should I look for?

Hi -

I'm a big fan of just plain Old Navy short sleeve dresses. I pair those with a pair of leggings underneath. I like to keep my body covered from the sun. I also throw on a gray sweater or cardigan or even a jacket when I'm cold. Ive been known to wear heels, flats, sandles and tennis shoes with these dresses. Old Navy dresses are are affordable and pack well. I also like that when I need a new one that is just like or similar, I almost always can run to Old Navy and find one in my size!

Rayon and polyester fabric are good packables. I’m going to check out the old Navy dresses, too, this summer. The dresses I linked are a nice weight.

Try Chico's. They have lots of light weight wrinkle free things. Prices are good if you catch them on sale.

I really like the dresses made out of a lightweight T-shirt type fabric for being comfortable, drying quickly and looking good with scarves or jewelry.

I am tall and like to have my dresses hit just below my knee, so I can step into a church while strolling in Europe. So many “knee length” Amazon searches show “way above the knee”, instead. I just bought a great black dress on Amazon that’s floor length, and I’ll just hem it to the length I like to be church appropriate & cool to wear . (Not posting the link because it’s not short-sleeved)

Thanks for all the suggestions and the links lulu! I will look at ordering the shorter dress you mentioned. I find dresses cooler and more comfortable and I have no problem wearing my keen sandals or new balance sneakers with them. I also like them right at the knee so at 5’2” I am a whiz at hemming! Leggings are a great idea too since they can also be worn with a longer shirt. The swing dresses from Old Navy are favorites of mine as well but they never have pockets (not a deal breaker since I usually have a small backpack with me.). After watching one of Sarah’s packing videos I am looking for lightweight layerable clothes and I am sure they will be in the stores soon with Spring just around the corner.

Ps. Target had some drapery T-shirt’s out today and a few of the lightweight peasant blouses too.

Last year a found several cute, casual dresses at JJill. The spring/summer collections should be coming out soon. Most of the styles come in petite too!

I wore this dress https://www.toadandco.com/womens/clothing/all-clothing/Windmere-II-Short-Sleeve-Dress?quantity=1&color=178 in Vietnam and it was comfortable In hot weather. It has short sleeves and pockets. I’m short and the length is perfect for me. I think the models must be 5’8” or so. The brand is Toad and Co.

Edited to add that I read some reviews and they have changed the fit so you may want to check out some of their other styles if seems to be too full.

I love Maggy London and London Times wrap dresses, they have some with cap sleeves. They pack well and don't wrinkle at all, are easy to wash, and you can adjust the fit to your figure, since they are wrap style. Unfortunately, they don't have pockets.

Seconding the recommendation for J Jill. In particular, their Wearever collection packs well.

I just bought two of these dresses for a trip to Florida in April:

OUGES Women's Summer Short Sleeve V-Neck Pattern Knee Length Dress with Pockets(Floral01,XL) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07N2PF7G4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_MiosEbXPWJ6K5

I tried washing them in the sink and they dry overnight. Material is very lightweight and comfortable, like t shirt material. Get a darker color to avoid it being see-through. I’m 5’9 and they hit just at my knee. The style gives you a waist, but hides a belly. And it has pockets!

My previous favorite travel dress was the Old Navy jersey swing dress. But that material takes longer to dry and wrinkles more. Get a print to hide wrinkles. I order the tall version and they hit just at my knee.

I think that material is the same as the ones I linked. It’s nice!
