I never wear sneakers in Europe, should I just leave them home?

I’ve been to Italy twice and France once. I wear my sneakers on the plane, but they never get worn again. My feet get hot, and I like my silver and gold vionic sandals and wear them the whole time. I love them. Is there a reason I need to take sneakers at all if I don’t tour in them?

Can you run in your Vionics? I'm asking because recently I've decided that for myself I want to wear a shoe on the plane that I can run in if something dreadful happens and I need to evacuate quickly.

Sorry to be Debbie Downer.

Will you have a back up pr of sandals in case you need to give your feet a rest from the Vionics?

I think the other question would be: how comfortable are you in them in very wet or very cold weather?

Katiecem, makes a great point; what will you wear if the weather is rainy and/or cold?

I love spending time outdoors, so I frequently gravitate towards parks. Paths can often be sandy, rocky, or muddy. My sneakers keep my feet protected and clean.

I'm with Pam. I always wear good footwear in transit. I'm getting off that plane, train, whatever! LOL

If your feet get hot, consider a different sneaker or a different sock.

The secret to packing light is one pair of shoes and they should be on your feet. Do take rubber flip flops for the shower and place of lodging.
As far as taking sneakers, wear the most comfortable shoes you own.

Don't know what a vionic sandal is but why would you pack something that you won't wear? Your question doesn't make any sense to me.

At what time of year would you be visiting, in what area, and in what activities will you be partaking?

No.

Clueless guy question: Why do you not wear the sandals on the plane?

Joe, AI generated response to wearing sandals on plane. :-)

I don't wear them when city sightseeing for the same reasons.

I have to disagree with Mary Pat regarding only having one pair of shoes. They might be the most comfortable shoes you have ever owned, but if something happens to them you don’t have a back up. I saw it happen when I was in Germany visiting my family there. We were staying in a rental house in a little town on the Rhine and the sole of my aunt’s shoe disintegrated. She didn’t bring another pair with her. Thankfully for her it happened when we were in Linz, a slightly bigger town, and she was able to buy another pair of shoes. Some of us have difficult feet due to the size we wear or conditions such as planter fasciitis.

I will agree with Pam that what we wear on the plane is important for more than just comfort. If something happens you must be able to evacuate the plane quickly or deal with any other emergency. My husband was an airport firefighter for 30 years and he saw what can happen during take off and landing.

She did say she wore athletic shoes on the plane but I'd sure want mine in any situation where I should move in a hurry. Now that I think about it, we experienced an emergency complete with many heavy police vehicles, sirens blaring, and armed personnel on foot repeatedly yelling at everyone to "CLEAR THE AREA!!" in Paris some years ago.

Personal thing but I can't imagine sightseeing comfortably in sandals in the rain or on loose gravel, and I always take 2 pairs of shoes; both closed-toe, broken in, and can be walked in all day. The last thing I want to do on a trip demanding a LOT of walking in have to try and replace failed shoes, and with an unbroken-in pair no less.

If I recall correctly, the gravel paths in the Tuileries, Jardin du Luxembourg, around Eiffel, and in some other places in Europe made my feet pretty dusty.

Are these one or two pair of sandals? If they are two pair, you are good (if that is all you going to wear anyway). If not, wear the sneakers so you have them for back-up.

I do pack light - usually under 20# but I'm with Andrea on always having a back up pair of shoes. I wear a Size 11 women's shoe and have a very wide forefoot. I can't even buy shoes at home unless I order them online. I do have a little bit of envy for women who can just walk in to any store and get fitted!

I pack light, I usually take only the pair I am wearing, a sensible walking shoe, the compromise being if I am doing something specific, I might take sandals/flip flops, for example, for beach or baths, or just to wear near the apartment/hotel.

If you only wear them on the plane, then yeah, why not leave them home.

But honestly, wearing sandals the whole trip, through the streets of Rome or most urban environments with the filth, and in most situations? Sorry, don't really care how hot your feet get, figure something out. Hot feet are a pretty solid symptom of foot fungus by the way.

I’m with you. I have smaller feet and can’t always fine what I need.

But additionally, I try to look at “what’s the worst that will happen if I don’t pack this item”?
If I have one pair of shoes, and something happens, I have to hobble around in a place unknown to me, to find a pair. And if they’re not comfortable and I end up with blisters and my feet hurt, how much of an impact will that have on my trip? So I always pack two.

It’s why I also try and follow the rule of “pack one item to account for much cooler weather or much colder weather”.

... or you wake up in Italy after too many bottles of wine and can only find one shoe.

Yes, true story. Never found it. Searched under the furniture, in the bedding, everywhere. No idea.
