Starting to pack my clothes for my upcoming trip to Italy in June. I'm trying to decide what is going to make the final cut. Most of my clothing items are very lightweight. But really, it's not how many clothing items you take, but the weight of what you take. I'm wondering what the total weight of your clothes are?
I've done Italy carry on bag 15 to 20lbs i.e. slacks, shorts. shirts, socks, briefs;
Basically we pack two changes and wear one for three complete changes. Add in a couple of extra tops, three underwear changes, and we good to do. All of the clothes are some type of a synthetic blend so light weigh and easy to care for. Never weighed the clothes separate so maybe ten, twelve pounds.
My packing is pretty similar to Frank's - three changes of clothes including what I'm wearing, maybe a couple of extra shirts. I find it's not so much the weight of the clothes but the weight of extra things, like chargers, batteries, camera, shoes, etc. Before I grew a beard, my rechargeable shaver added a pound to what I carried. The contents of my carry-on bag is usually less than 10 lb.
Bag and all contents under 8kg.
I recommend you get a kitchen scale, weigh each piece and make a note of it. That top that seems so light on your body or in your hand may weigh much more than you think.
Likewise, as Lee said, weigh the other stuff too. I have about 8 pounds of clothes set aside for the next trip, including what I'll be wearing. I may need to cut some of that, but the rest of the stuff will have to be cut dramatically if I want to meet my goals.
And don't discount volume. I recently replaced a 20 oz rain jacket with an 11 oz one, but I haven't yet figured out how to fold the new one so that it takes up less space than the first one. I may need another compression cube.
I'm just under 8 lbs. l think, including my outer jacket but not including shoes! (I wear one pair and take one pair.)
One pair shoes
One pair sandals or slippers, depending on weather and destination
One pair jeans OR 2 hiking pants, depending on weather
4 LS shirts, combination of Merino and sun shirts (history of skin cancer), depending on weather
Set of Ibex woolies 1 to sleep in
Silk kimono
Yoga pants and cotton LS tee to relax in hotel room
2 socks, 2 bras, 2 underwear
Packed in Osprey 33l backpack
Total weight 10.4 lbs (including backpack)
I agree with Lee. My clothes are not the problem; it's the electronics.
In addition to what I wear on the plane, I pack:
* 1 pair of jeans
* about 4 shirts
* rain jacket
* 1 cardigan
* 1 very light pair of flat shoes
* silk pj's
* socks and underwear
Now, electronics on the other hand ... oh my, don't even get me started. Camera(s), computer, chargers, cables and batteries are my packing vices.
My backpack to Italy last Summer weighed a total of 13.5 lb.s packed. That's clothes plus pack. I didn't have any dress clothes. My only footwear was the sandals on my feet. I did laundry about 1X/week. No heavy coats. Mostly light shirts that could be rolled, Capri pants and longer shorts that were almost capri.s. No socks.
I don't get caught up in what my clothes weigh, I just want to ensure I have the right amount and some variety. Most tops are about the same, so my challenge is to select just 6--that means I wear one on the plane and there's another in my carry-on, with 4 in checked bag. One spare pair of jeans, wash every 4 days. I wash socks and undies nightly, so 4 spare undies and maybe 2 socks. One spare pair of shoes/boots, and I wear the heaviest on travel days.
Bag and all contents under 8kg. Bruce (8kg = 17.6#)
I'm just under 8 lbs. Janet (I assume that is the contents only.)
Total weight 10.4 lbs (including backpack) Akros (Osprey 33l, about 2#)
My backpack to Italy last Summer weighed a total of 13.5 lb.s packed.
Sunbaked
See what you can do. If you think about what you are taking and use some discipline to avoid over-packing, you won't need a rolling bag, and that will save even more weight.
In the beginning, I made a packing list on a spreadsheet and weighed everything individually with a scale at the post office.
I'm confused. Are we talking just the weight of clothes? of the carryon? or carryon and personal item? Some people just move their weight out of the carryon into another bag and claim unusual lightness. My suitcase weighed just under 23 lbs last time due things I don't usually bring: belt, extra pair of shoes, and a complete RS book (I follow directions). My personal item weighed 7 lbs mainly due to my dslr and larger lens. My goal is a 20 lb wheelie carryon (so actually 15 lbs of content), but my personal item will not get much lighter unless I ditch my dslr, which I don't plan to do. I weigh my clothes but do not consider their weight separate from the rest of the bag.
My question wasn't meant to start a discussion on total bag weight (although I guess it's inevitable). And I do know that clothing is not the major culprit of excess weight. But, as I read many posts about packing lists and the the articles of clothing taken, I started thinking about the amount of clothing taken vs the actual weight of the clothing. The two are not necessarily exclusive to each other. Someone's 9 or 10 pieces of clothing may weigh more than someone else's 15 pieces. So, my question is...how much do your clothes weigh?
forget this.
I wear dresses - light weight spaghetti strap type. I carry a shrug with me for entering churches. I have leggings for cooler weather. While I've never weighed them I can travel a long while with 5 dresses, 2 prs of leggings, the usual under garments, and a very light sweater - none of which weigh much at all. My weight all comes from the other stuff.
When I step on the scale to weigh myself, I'm certain that whatever I'm wearing weighs about 20 pounds. :D
You all made me think about what I'm planning to take for 18 days in Aug/Sept. I weighted everything individually and came up the following inclusive
RS rolling carry on's stuff : 19 1/2#
Tote bag including purse: 10 1/2#
Wearing: 3#
A little on the heavy side so I may rethink some clothes. A test pack will tell me. Maybe 3 pr leggings instead of 4 which then can reduce shirts by 1 to 6. Keep the dress even though the "travel knit" weights more because it can layer with various tops for different looks. OTC drugs will diminish weight by 1 oz daily.
No back packs for my aching back. And I want clean clothes daily, doing laundry every 2-3 days depending where we're staying.
I'm getting ready right now and my backpack is about 14-15lbs total. I also have a purse that is another couple pounds, because I take a heavy DSLR. If I weren't a photographer all my stuff would be under 17lbs.
I did my best to weigh the clothes only and that came out to somewhere around 6lbs, including lightweight sneakers. Without the sneakers or my "luxury item", a denim jacket, clothing was about 4lbs. The rest of the weight is the bag itself, toiletries and makeup, a camera lens, some random papers, and an ipad.
Here's what I have as far as clothing (traveling in summer)
2 scarves
3 tank tops
3 t-shirts
1 dress
2 skirts
1 pants
1 pajama shorts
4 underwear, one bra
1 swimsuit
1 extremely lightweight raincoat (like a plastic poncho in weight)
1 denim jacket
1 sneakers
plus what I wear on the plane - maxi dress, sandals, and socks in my bag. I have a rule of thumb of 10 clothing items (tops, bottoms, dresses, not underwear, pjs, swimwear, coats, etc). I'm at 11 on this trip and might still want to cut out one shirt...
I am similar with my clothing items I choose to travel with being very lightweight (regardless of season). I take 10 to 11 pounds maximum of clothing in my 21" rolling carry on; the only other items in the bag are 3 packing cubes (2 medium, 1 large), 1 small mesh laundry bag, 1 pair flip flops and up to 2 pairs lightweight footwear. I prefer to keep total weight to 20 pounds for bag and its contents. Have a great trip!!
