help I just booked on SwissAir and doubt they will allow my TravelPro Maxlite soft 16x11x8"

Ignore this - see my post near bottom... sorry!
and I hear they are strict, and a personal is 40x30x10 which is effectively a 12L backpack. Darn. I had planned everything in the travelpro so obviously will have cut a bit and get a smaller bag. I won't check bags. it's all in carry-on. any experiences with them? (BOS to Ibiza for a week in late Sept) Thanks!

Kris,

I’m confused, if your TravelPro measures 16”x 11”x 8”, why do you think it will be a problem when Swiss Air lists their carry-on baggage limits as follows:

ECONOMY 1 x max. 8 kg Dimensions max. 55 x 40 x 23 cm

Would you please clarify your question or concern?
Thanks!

I don't understand. Nowhere have I seen that SwissAir has limited carry-on luggage to only a personal item. Don't they still allow a carry-on (55x40x23 cm) in addition to a personal item?

Ummm, Jane, check your math. She has a 236 liter backpack? I don't think any airline allows 236L, even in checked luggage.

Hi all. I was planning on calling the travelpro a "personal bag and holding it in my lap. Everything was to be in it. it is sold as 18"x11"x8" but is actually 16"x11"x8" which theoretically could pass Swiss Air carry on but I heard of one instance where it didn't. Since everything is in there, if they required me to check it at gate, I would have to do a quick change into a smaller bag that could pass Swiss Air's Personal bag 40cmx30cmx10cm which is 12L. My Maxlite is about 23L and certainly won't pass Swiss Air as a personal bag. To be safe I may use a backpack instead of the Maxlite - I have seen one listed as 20L (haha) which looks like it would pass. (yes, I understand that lots of these capacity measurements are not correct but trying to go more by outside measurements).

The disappointment in all this was I knew I could get the snorkel fins in the maxlite, but no way in anything smaller - oh well!!!

Kris, you don't get to hold any bags in your lap.

so personal bag is in overhead compartment or under seat? alongside carry-on?

edit : I suppose it would if I have a backpack...

Are you flying business class? They only allow one bag in economy and not one and a "personal".

Personal item should go under the seat in front of you, so as allow other people to use the overhead.

economy
would only have one bag plus my travelon waist pack.
I'm beginning to think in terms of 20L backpack instead of the maxlite. I can always use the maxlite on other trips.

Never mind - I panicked when I should have just called Swiss Air US, which I just did, and they said max (she said circumfrence but really meant L+W+H) was 118CM (55x40x23) so I stuffed the maxlite full of down jackets and measured a total of 91 (99 if I'm sloppy cause it bulges in the middle) so I'm not even close, as I think above folks were saying.

Also she said I get a carry on bag of the above dimensions, and I ALSO get a personal bag with dimension total max 90(40x30x10).
I don't know if they will count my waist pack but I can easily have a little bag holding inflatable pillows, ear plugs, papers, etc - little stuff and put the maxlite above or below as they wish.

So it looks like my fins are back on... :) watch out Es Torrent... here I come!

Thanks all!!! Sorry!!!

TravelPro Maxlite soft 16x11x8"

If this was intended to be the 'personal item', which is restricted to 16x12x4 inches, and it is full, it likely could/would be banned.

If it is the only piece you are bringing into the cabin, then it is well withing the 'carry-on' bag limit of 21x16x9 inches

yep, read the above I just posted. I am allowed both so I'll get another little bag to do the personal bag duty.

Kris,

Just make sure you keep your carry-on luggage within the weight limit, which is 8Kg ( 17.6#)

yes, thanks, when I did a tentative weigh this evening it was only 4 lbs not incl liquids and electronics (charger, adapter, elec toothbrush). So I am expecting 12lb or so with snorkel stuff.

Just filled bag with most everything including snorkel stuff (mask, snorkel, fins, vest) and it was just under 10. Things are looking good.
