Favorite Luggage Scale

I don't trust low cost "kitchen" or "travel" scales. I prefer to take my stuff to the post office and weigh it on the parcel scale in the lobby. I like to weigh the things I might take individually, then put them on a spreadsheet. Then I can look at all the combinations.

If you have a decent bathroom scale just weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding your packed bag.

I've done the bathroom scale thing. It doesn't work so well with a roller bag. If I hold the bag in front of me, I can't see the weight. To the side, it confuses my fancy digital scale. However, if I decide to use a backpack, the scale might be more cooperative.

I haven't tried the lobby Post Office scale thing. The PO closest to us has no real lobby or scale. There's a bigger one that's about 45 minutes away, and I'm sure it probably has a lobby scale. I'll definitely try that, especially since one of our favorite Mexican restaurants is around the corner.

The Taylor Luggage scale has a strap to hang the bag being weighed and is fairly compact and light. It's digital and probably uses a electronic load cell. The Taylor's measured weight has been very close (fraction of a pound) to what the airline scales measure.

I bring the Taylor so that I can check baggage weight for the return flight. The checked bag gets heavier for two reasons. Firstly I may be buying stuff to bring home. I've been known to return with souvenir cans of beer (at a pound a pint). Secondly, if I have checked luggage capacity (weight and volume), I will move some of my carry-on load to my duffle bag for the flight home while keeping under the 50 pound weight limit.

Hold bag above your head, like you would have do to put it in the airplane overhead, and then you can see the reading?

I use a scale I got out the £1 shop, works fine for me.when I get to the airport I check the weight on an empty check in counter, never had a problem.

I’ve got several and they are all about the same. I do prefer the one that has a bigger handle you hold parallel to the floor. I think I got that one at Bed, Bath and Beyond. I’ve also seen them at the AAA store - don’t even ask why I still look at them!!

I do like to get a weight before I leave home and then do a quick weight on the scales at the airline counter if it’s not crowded (small airport, lol) to compare. Sitting in a FL airport right now and checked it headed back home. It’s always heavier on the return and was 28#. Must be the thick birding book, the blanket I wound up purchasing when I spent the night on the floor in the ATL airport and perhaps a shirt or 2!!

A scale at our post office? Hahaha. There’s a scale at our airport near the check-in counters. It’s entertaining watching our foreign exchange students returning home scrambling to abandon items to meet weight limits.

Well, at least make it digital. I have one that is not. Face and functon is like the old scalesmin the grocery store produce section (without the holding tray). However it does way very close to the airport scales, so it works. You just need to reset it every time and it takes up too much valuable space in luggage when traveling.

Silly me. I never would've thought of looking at BB&B for a luggage scale. With every version of a coupon possible and a store within an hour of home, that sounds like my best option. Thanks, Pam.

I have one from REI. Works fine. Weighs in either pounds or kilos (digital scale). I lost the little battery compartment cover a while ago but it still works fine with a bit of tape to keep the battery in place. I’ve had to replace the battery once but other than that it’s worked well for years. Seems accurate enough that I wouldn’t worry if I were within a pound of the limit.

I’ve also seen them at Target (closest is 2 hours away but I think they are a regular item) and possibly at KMart.
