Enabler Alert: $30 Personal Item Found

I don't need another bag but I ran across this crossbody shoulder bag from Uniqlo, https://www.uniqlo.com/us/en/products/E476764-000/00?colorDisplayCode=57. The website doesn't list the size but according to Travel and Leisure, the bag measures 36cm x 26.5cm x 11cm. So it would meet the personal item restrictions of Lufthansa, Condor, Iceland Air, Ryan Air, etc. For $30 I might need to head to the mall.

Pam, aqua would be nice. But now you have me looking at Tom Bihn! LoL.

Frank, thanks for catching that. I think I was too excited to look further.

I don't care for the dark interior. Too easy to lose things in there.

Yikes, I need a personal item bag for my flight home from Singapore. I was going to “wing it” with a bag I already had, but this seems to be calling my name. The personal item size is 40cm x 30cm x 10cm. I am guessing I can get by with an extra cm on the depth. The fact that there is a store maybe 2 miles from my house seems to seal the deal.

It looks like it could be a nice day bag for long ship excursions as well.

Thanks (I think?)

I think it looks great, but the colors. How do we get them to give us more exciting choices?

My daughters like Uniqlo clothes and they make inexpensive Xmas presents. They look good at first, are cheaply made and don’t hold up. Anyone who buys a $30 bag for international travel will likely suffer a similar fate.

36cm, 26.5cm, & 11 cm divided by 2.54 and rounded to the nearest tenth of an inch are 14.2, 10.4, & 4.3 inches, but the outside envelope is only 10.5L. How can it's capacity be 13 liters and still be only 10.5L on the outside (10# of s... in a 5# bag)? What else aren't they honest about?

As for 40 x 30 x 10, 40 x 30 is over 20% bigger than 36 x 26.5, so with the bag being soft sided and flexible, the extra cm of thickness shouldn't matter.

I paid under $30 for a much larger OPEC bag and used it for years as a carryon until I learned to pack really light and it became too big. As long as you don't overstuff a bag, buy do carry it on and baby it, quality is not such a big consideration.

Re color of the bag: I wonder whether this is their “winter” collection and additional or brighter colors might be on offer later. One can only hope.

As for quality, I agree that a $30 bag is unlikely to hold up as well as a $75 bag.

Lee, the sides are not rigid. It's a soft sided bag. The bag will bulge when packed to the gills.

I have been using a holdall bought on Amazon a few months ago that cost under $20. It's held up great with no signs of wear and tear.

Just because one bag costs more than another doesn't mean it's that much better. You could be paying for a name brand versus a generic bag like mine.

All my posts are archived. Look them up. When have I ever promoted "packing to the gills"?

Despite the companies claims, as I pointed out, the capacity is 10.5L, not 13L. Yes, if packed to the gills, 13L, the bag will bulge out and will not fit in a 40 x 30 x 10 (12L) sizer. If the bag does bulge to 40 x 30 cm limits, 10.5 liters will only be 8.75 cm thick, well under 10 cm limit.

My point exactly. If you carry your bag on and take care of it, and don't pack it to the gills, even an inexpensive bag will hold up.

If you give your bag to the bag apes, it doesn't matter how much you paid for your bag, it's toast.

With the $75 bag you are paying for marketing and name brand more than any change in quality. $75 or $30 it cost $5 to make in Asia.

My personal item is approaching 20 years old, was $20 when I bought it, now sells for $30 I think. Its literally been on 100 flights. But alas, the name is unknown.

Trotter, thanks. Nice bag.
