Eddie Bauer 30% off sale, backpacks 30% - 50% off -- Packable backpack review added

Hi everyone. I found the sale when searching for packable backpacks on Eddie Bauer's website. Their packable backpack is mentioned by Frank on the following thread (thanks Frank!): https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/packing/daypack-lightweight-packable-vs-small-sturdier-daypack
I really like my Pacsafe tote on the plane but it's unwieldly to carry around all day plus I discovered my neck can't handle the weight of my Travelon crossbody bag. I am looking for a packable backpack to haul around a small purse, camera, sweater, water bottle and other day things. At $15 sale price for a 20L packable I don't have anything to lose if I don't like it or it doesn't hold up to wear. The 30L just looks a little too big.
Other luggage and some travel supplies are also on sale.

Edited to add the EB link: http://www.eddiebauer.com/product/stowaway-packable-20l-daypack/82300168?showProducts=&color=147&sizetype=&size=
And no, I'm not affiliated with Eddie Bauer. Comfortably poor and happily retired.

3/11 Review: I received the 20L packable backpack yesteday. At first glance, since I haven't use it and won't anytime soon, the backpack looks substantial enough for a day pack to lug around a small purse, phone, sunglasses, camera, sweater, umbrella/rain coat and water bottle. I wouldn't add much more weight than that other maybe a few souvenirs. The inside has a large pocket that velcroes to keep things in, no security locks or hooks but those can easily sew in or locks added. Straps are very adjustable, wide without lots of padding, but I think will be comfortable. I plan to spray it with Dry Camp to add some waterproofing. The real challenge is putting backpack back into it's storage pocket. I also don't like the carrying loop on the pouch since it interferes with the zipper when used as the backpack; a pair of scissors will fix that. For 15 bucks looks and usability exceeded my expectations so I'm happy. If you're interested EB still has them on sale.

I can't remember if I've mentioned this on a "purse" thread where you've participated so excuse if this is a repeat!

I love the Eddie Bauer Connect Travel wallet. I see it is $14 which is a good deal altho I think I might have gotten mine at the EB outlet for less. I'm not sure what you are looking for in a small purse, but I take this in addition to a regular sized purse to Europe. I travel solo and wear this on the plane with my passport, some money and a CC, in addition to having my money stash and other CC/Debit cards in my money belt. It's small, is partially concealed under my cardigan and is small enough it doesn't get in my way in my airplane seat. I have my passport ready for Immigration, then move it to my money belt after I pass thru there. I have enough cash to get me to my hotel where I can reconfigure things and get out my purse for sightseeing.

Thanks Pam. I just bought a small purse at Nordstrom Rack that should be good for travel and when I don't want to use my daily at-home leather tote. I ordered the above packable backpack in hopes of someday actually getting to go to Europe. It's a positive, determined gesture. We're still awaiting the trial of the travel agent who stole money from my traveling companion, me and at least seven others. Indictment is tomorrow, 3/5.

Along with backpacks, I see that my suitcase is on sale, too. I purchased the Eddie Bauer Expedition, Medium, several years ago. It’s been an excellent suitcase that’s been through many work trips and yearly vacations to Europe. I bought it in the Sapphire color, so it’s easier to spot when it’s in storage under a bus, etc.

Horsewoofie, yes it is good to make a determined positive step toward travel! At this price you can do it!

When I responded, I wondered what the current situation was with the fraudster. You know we are all interested in the outcome. Your experience has to be the worst fraud instance we've seen on this forum.

I have the 30 and 20L. I like the other 20L (with the 4 loops on it), because I find it still too big for much of my needs and I can use cord or S hooks to reduce the bag size and thus the draw on my back from contents shifting outwards. I use it for bird watching, so S hooks don't matter. It is lightweight and comfortable and has held up well over 4 years....but has been lightly used.
One of the bags had a little fraying where the strap entered the bag, but I sew, so repaired it and had done well afterwards. Zips are strong, and I like the pockets. However, there is no knowing whether the manufacturer is the same or not. For $15, it is handy to have around.
EDIT: My one negative comment are the water bottle holders. It is most likely a personal preference, but I don't like to use a bottle in a holder that isn't at least 2/3 or more covered by the pocket. As there is such little structure here, you may need to reduce the waterbottle size, or pack it inside the bag.

"The real challenge is putting backpack back into it's storage pocket."

That's always the case!!

That is the bag my wife and I have. Hers is older so has deeper water bottle pockets than mine but still seems to be OK.

Its our "personal" item on the plane and day bag when 'touristing'. ( Just take one for that)

We have been really happy with them.

As for packing it back into its pocket, just keep shoving it in. It fits, really!

Yes. Unzip the storage pocket fully, then just keep, stuffing the pack in. It fits.

I have never found these difficult to get back in the pouch. My technique is sort of like scrunching up your socks (or stockings) in preparation of putting it on your foot. Turn the pouch 'right side out' , then keeping a thumb on each side, use the fingers of each hand to push the pack in (I find alternating hands more effective). Perhaps women of an age who have had to wear stockings or pantyhose may be more adept.

Good description, Maria! And very clear for those of us "of a certain age."
But I will stick to my Civita ... because it's already paid for.
And Pam, thanks for mentioning the travel wallet -- reminded me that I had picked up a little purse on one of many thrift-store forays.
