eBags Motherlode Replacement Wheels

Hi Everyone,

My eBags Motherlode wheels recently started breaking down and calling Samsonite didn't result in being able to obtain any replacement wheels. I was told the Samsonite branded bags have a different wheel design more in line with their other bags. I was able to source my own wheels, so I wanted to share the information in case anyone finds it useful.

The wheels on the bag are 76mm in diameter, 24mm in width, with 8mm and 6mm bearings. I purchased wheels on Amazon with 8mm ID bearings and then bought separate bearings on Amazon with a 6mm ID, 22mm OD, and 7mm thickness (636-2RS). I popped the outer bearings out with the short end of an allen wrench and pushed the new ones in. You can then simply swap the old wheels for new ones.

Just make sure to keep the luggage flat on the floor (not standing up) with the wheels facing down when removing and replacing the wheels. If you lay the luggage flat with the wheels up, the bolts will fall out of the housing and you will have to take the luggage apart to fix it.

I hope this information helps someone out!

Thank you, I have Samsonite bags. Also, you can buy wheel covers to protect your wheels from most any place, but I got mine from Amazon. The wheel covers can come in any color, e.g. luggage wheel protectors. After reading how an individual who was on a Sicily tour had their wheel chopped up from the pavement, I decided to invest in those wheel covers that look a lot like little tires. The directions say something about turning them inside out to get them on, however they are a little bit stretchy and with a bit of tugging they will go on. I plan on carrying a few extra in case one of them tears off my suitcase wheel.

From the dimensions you posted this sounds like a 2 wheeled bag and not a spinner. How difficult was it to get the wheels off?

Correct, this is a two wheel bag and not a spinner.
The wheels come off very easy with an allen (hex) wrench from the outside of the bag. They can be swapped with very little effort as long as you are careful to lay the hard side of the bag on the floor. If you put the soft side on the floor, the nuts inside the plastic assembly will fall out, and then you will have to take that apart from inside the bag to put them back in place.
