I went to Europe in sept/October for 7 weeks. When I checked my pack in I asked the airline for a plastic bag to put my pack in to protect straps and those all important buckles. They said they don't give them out for packs anymore, just car sets and strollers etc. but after much begging they gave us one which we put in the bottom of our packs for the return trip home. I am going again in a few weeks and this time I'm looking for a lightweight rip stop nylon type of duffle to put my pack in and zip it shut. Don't care if it locks it just needs to be superlight. I live in Vancouver bc and wondered if anyone knows where I could find one as I haven't. I don't want to spend a fortune on this.
Thank you......Marie
REI in Seattle? Laundry bag ??
Thanks Laura but I'm in Vancouver Canada, Rei in Seattle not an option. The one they have is not lightweight as I want to keep it in the bottom of my pack to return home so it needs to squish down really small. Thanks for your suggestion though, happy trails:). Maybe a gbg bag or two.
Marie,
Perhaps something like this would work.....

They have numerous other models to choose from. The main store is at 130 West Broadway. Parking used to be a bit of an issue in that area, but not sure what it's like now.
Good luck!
Lots of backpackers are using the Ikea shopping bags.
The Osprey Airporter may fit the bill. They come in various sizes. They are, at least in Britain, a bit pricey, but I managed to get an earlier design at a good discount. They are quite generously sized. The small size easily holds a 40 litre bag. I haven't used one in earnest yet but they seem very tough.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. The osprey air porter at Rei is not avail anymore their website says and it's too heavy and bulky to let it sit in the bottom of my pack to lug around for 5 weeks, the pretty Mec one is too small to hold my Deuter 45+10 pack. Never thought of IKEA bag but large one may work well, I could put a zipper across the top, pretty sturdy...great plan...will get one tomorrow and try it out....brilliant! Thank you all👍
Sounds like you would be happy with a "heavy duty contractor bag" That's what the airlines give people to cover car seats. They"re just giant plastic garbage bags that are tougher than your regular regular plastic garbage bag. You can usually get them at hardware stores and Amazon.com
Ikea make a bag called the Frakta which is used with their little yellow folding sipping carts. It's 3.99 has a zipper and two sets of handles and, can,be carried,on your back like a pack itself. It's not one of their shopping bags for $1. I'm getting a few of these, exactly what I'm looking for. Look at their site and check it out.
I just got a give-away Helly Hansen duffle bag. The "back-pack" straps fold away into a Velcro pocket. 0.5 m overall length, 0.3 m diameter.
I got mine at MEC. They have specific light bags that zip and can be locked-at least they did 2 years ago!
I'dd be worried about the buckles being adequately protected in the light-weight bag, so maybe you can wrap them more. Backpacks that are designed for travel versus hiking have straps that fold behind a padded portion of the bag, such as Rick's version or Eagle Creek's, etc.
It's not so much the lightweight material it's more a matter of keeping the straps from catching on the luggage handling equipment and carousels that cause the breakage. There is no breakage protection with a plastic bag either which is what some airlines give you. The trick is to do up ALL the straps nice and tight first before putting backpack in the bag. Mine is a good backpacking pack
Happy trails:)
