Donating Travel Stuff

Well, I finally did it, I actually decluttered my storage unit. And now I have lots of bags and travel accessories, among other things, to give away.

I really don't want the hassle of selling things so I want to give them away. I used to give stuff to my local Habitat for Humanity store but they are cracking down on accepting some items.

If they don't accept the stuff, what other charities have you found open to taking travel bags and accessories?

(Note, I am not trying to sell things here just find places to take the donations.)

Frank II, we've taken bags to the usual suspects - Goodwill, Salvation Army, Disabled Veterans - but I understand that shelters for women find luggage particular useful.

If you know of a battered women's shelter near you, you might see if they would want them. Most women who stay there leave their home very quickly and have minimal clothing and luggage for themselves and their children, so that might be helpful to them.

And of course, there is always Goodwill or St. Vincent de Paul.

Often places that service foster children will take any bags in good shape. Kids often don’t have luggage to take their things from one place to another and use garbage bags.

Thanks for the ideas of woman's shelters for bags as well as for foster kids. I hadn't thought of that.

Over the years when we traveled we would collect travel size items such as soap, shampoo, body gel, lotion etc. AAA has a “soap for hope” program that collects items for women’s shelters. It’s a wonderful program. They also accept luggage.

Thanks Frank Il for donating your items. We recently helped a relative who gave away similar items to Goodwill.

Yes, our women’s shelter was happy to have my bags/backpacks when I cleaned out closets 2 years ago. I got the idea from someone else on the forum back then.

Frank, when I donate items like luggage, there’s the women’s shelters as mentioned - also any small zippered cases that work for toiletry kits are appreciated along with hotel shampoo/soap. I try to add a cute stuffed animal inside suitcases, if you happen to also have any in your home, for their kids.
