Cotopaxi 18L purchase

When I was a kid, my dad used to say “don’t let it burn a hole in your pocket” whenever he gave me a bit of money. Well, the REI rewards card doesn’t count the same now, right? :)

I have been assessing what to take for our upcoming trip to the Cotswolds in the Fall in terms of a day backpack pack for walks. I really liked my Roka Canfield backpack, but when I wore it to our Scotland trip, I realized how wet it would get - even in light rain. When packed with a bit more in terms of day items, the straps weren’t quite as comfortable as I would like. I think for a purse type bag or for short outings, it’s great, but I worry about wearing it for a 3-4 hour hike. So, with REI rewards money in hand, I went looking for a backpack that is water resistant, not too big, lightweight, and comfortable.

The suggestion many on the forum repeat is that you should really try the different bags on to see what fits/ suits you. It is so true. I went in thinking that I was going to get a 24 L or even 26 L bag. I tried on the Patagonia black hole 25L bag in a royal blue color that was on sale for $105 down from $150. It was obviously very well-made and very water resistant looking, but sooo blue. It seemed to ride up too high above my neck. Then I tried it on the Osprey daylight plus in 20 L. That one was a close second. It was very comfortable to wear and was in a concrete color. It is very well organized. It didn’t seem to be water resistant though, so that gave me pause. Then I saw the Cotopaxis and checked out the 26L and 18L Allpa. Water resistance looked good but I really liked the size, weight, and fit of the 18L. I think for a day pack for short hikes it will be great. Good water bottle holder, too. I’m going to take it as my personal bag and probably put a small crossbody purse in for city time. I purchased the mineral color, which is very neutral. Lighter in color, though, so I do worry a bit about it staying clean.

Has anyone else used this size? I know there are quite a few folks on here with the 35 L Allpa. I hope this proves to be a good purchase! Mother’s Day gift came a bit early, but I’m excited to see how it works out.

Yes, I do love my 35L Cotopaxi which will be packed soon for a month-long trip. : ). I haven’t looked at your size one in detail, but I did ask travelers in Europe & Hawaii who had various sizes of Cotopaxi’s how they liked theirs as some real-time reviews. Some of them were the size you purchased. They all had glowing comments, which helped me decide to go with a Cotopaxi.

Oh, another bag for me to think about! I'm so excited! Now I really have to check out this Cotopaxi 18L. Yes, I am one of those that has the Cotopaxi 35L, although I haven't used it in a while. I mostly use it for road trips, but the 18L might be something that would work for me. Of course I already have a personal bag that I like, but what's life without a little variety?

Thanks, Mustlovedogs! I need to go check the Cotopaxi website!

Mardee, you home with a bad knee could have all kinds of on-line enabler purchase shenanigans happening - LOL!

I have the Cotopaxi Allpa 28l after reading the recommendations on here and love it. Thanks, again Jean. It’s too big for a personal item on BA so I forked out the money for the 20l. I haven’t used it yet (two weeks and counting) but I think it’s going to be just fine. Not as many zippered compartments so the tablet sleeve leaves a bit to be desired but I really like the clamshell and not having to dig for stuff that always moves to the bottom.

Margie, I thought about the 20L when I saw it online. It is very nice! For the purpose of using it as a day type/ hiking bag, though, I opted for the top zip style. My biggest hemming and hawing came with the color choice. They had the mineral color and a pretty brick in stock. I quickly did a search online in the store about the mineral color being washable, and found a few reports that it seems to be, so I went for that. The brick is very pretty, though.

I have the Cotopaxi 28 which I love, but use an Osprey day pack for day hikes and for my personal item on flights.

Right now, I have both the Cotopaxi and the BagSmart bag (that Mardee posted) laying on the bed ready to pack tonight. I can't decide on which one I will take tomorrow. I will decide when I actually pack and see how it all goes in.

One can never have too many options at hand;)

Mustlovedogs, I also went back and forth, mainly wondering if opening up the 20l was going to be a pain but came to the conclusion that on a plane it would be easier than pulling everything out to find whatever had shuffled to the bottom and I love the convenience of the zippered top compartments which are the same as the 28l. I also saw a couple of reviews that said the mineral for the 18l cleaned up nicely so you made a great choice.
