Costco Strikes Again!

Just back from my local Costco and they are carrying the Eddie Bauer Departure long sleeve shirt in 4 colors. Price is awesome at $15.99! Another gal who was also buying some commented to me that with her diagnosis of melanoma, she has had to wear long sleeve shirts, even in the summer. She finds that these blouses are the coolest temp of any brand she has ever purchased and are the most comfortable blouse she owns for the summer. They are also available online for $17.99 but just so you know, the red they list online is really terra-cotta and there is no zipper pocket, it is a small open pocket at the hip. Get ‘em while they’re there!

Good recommendation. I just checked and the EB Departure 3.0 longsleeve womens shirt has a UPF of 50+, so it offers excellent sun protection. Hopefully the version they are selling at Costco has the same.

My husband, an oncologist, insists that we both hike fully covered up, either with a shirt with adequate UPF rating, or slathered in good sunscreen. I prefer the shirt, as does he, but use sunscreen on my face. And wear a broad-brimmed hat, also with a high UPF rating.

I love these shirts! My Costco doesn’t have them yet, but I just ordered a blue one online. The description says it has the zipper pocket - I hope so, because the ones I got last year have the funny little open pocket.

What are the 4 colors at your Costco? Online shows red, white, blue.

Thanks for the heads up - I’ll keep checking at my Costco. They should appear there soon, since I just ordered one online. LOL. That’s what happened last year.

Just as an FYI, I bought the white and lavender last year, and the lavendar was a heavier fabric, doesn't feel as cool to wear as the white or my Ex officio. I am one that has to be covered completely in the sun, as well, so the weight of the fabric is super important to me. That said, there are plenty of times when the Costco Eddie Bauer works just fine.

Anyone have some hot tips for getting the white clean? Like around the collar and cuffs? Part of the issue is that I travel with it, so its worn more between washes than it would be at home, plus, sink washing doesn't do as good of a job.

jules m I have made a paste of Biz and used it on "ring around the collar". If you don't wash the shirt with anything that has color, you might also try a chlorox pen.

Hey Margie!
We’re headed to France in September and I plan to find out. Others on this forum have loved them so I am more than willing to give them a go. They don’t weigh much so won’t take up valuable space in my carry-on and I usually run cold so I am liking the long sleeves with the option to roll them up. I always use the spray bottle of water the night before to get rid of wrinkles if they don’t shake out. And I can also see me wearing them even when I’m not traveling!

They do not wrinkle and fair quite well in a travel wardrobe.

I bought the white Departure 2.0 from Eddie Bauer in 2022. I had to really press it to get the original fold lines out but after that it does not wrinkle. I’ve not had problems with collar and cuff grunge and wore it for about 3 weeks straight on the Best of Italy tour.

(PS if you don’t iron much be sure to test your steam iron on something else first. Mine was so old and unused that it shot rusty water all over the white shirt. I got it out, threw the iron away when it cooled off and started over. Or use a pressing cloth!)

Off to look at Costco.com…(insert eye roll emoji )

After readings Pam’s trip report where she described the wrinkle free indestructible nature of her white Departure 2 shirt I bought one in blue. I had it in Greece in May and it’s all true. Well made, no wrinkles, comes out of the suitcase looking great. The only thing to bear in mind is it seems a tad heavy to me when compared to a long sleeved cotton t shirt. I was wearing it as an over shirt first thing on a cooler morning or late in the evening but I didn’t wear it as a single layer because it felt sort of odd on my skin as an only layer for some reason. A bit too heavy, a bit too synthetic, a bit unbreathable, a bit too something. I could be the only one with this issue however but I thought I’d mention it.

Lyndash, that is my experience with the fabric of the white shirt I got last year. I still like it and use it, but when its really hot or humid, I like my Exoficio.

Thanks, Cala, for the laundry suggestions, again, I think the issue is when I'm traveling, the white blouse can be on and off, every day. Plus its washed in cold water which I always feel doesn't clean as well. I'll try a paste of Biz.

Like jules m I bought the white and lavender colors last year but had the opposite experience - white was much thinner fabric than the lavender color. I haven't had issues getting my white one clean with ordinary laundry soap, but I'd use a shout wipe or two if the grunge was an issue.

I too find them a tad bit heavy when it's super hot, so I wear Columbia brand fishing shirts that are similar style but lighter weight. FWIW my local Costco online shop is also showing red, white, and blue as the available colors, though the "red" looks to be more like dark pink.

Our Costco is carrying white, terracotta, steel blue and navy. And no, no zipper on hip in seam pocket.

I had to really press it to get the original fold lines out but after that it does not wrinkle.

The trick to get rid of those is to press it with a mixture of water and white vinegar. That should get rid of the folds better than just water. Just spritz it on with a spray bottle. Another theatrical costuming trick. :-)

Regarding traveling with a white shirt: I always hike with one and take one on all international and domestic trips. I have found that of the two I own the one that doesn't wrinkle at all is Patagonia. The SPF 50 Solumbra white cotton blend shirt does but the wrinkles go away after hanging it in a bathroom after a shower. The steam works wonders on smoothing them out. Keeping them clean after 3 wears is a challenge but I use the hair dryer on them after sink washing.

I just got a white one and it’s a bit sheer. I’m on the fence about whether I’ll keep it.

@CL, you are correct, just pulled out the blouses and its the lavendar that is heavier.

@Andrea, I often wear mine over a tshirt. I like to take off the blouse when I'm out of the sun.

Jules, that’s a good point. Thanks.
