Without going into the gory details, I'll be flying soon and need to bring a small amount of chlorhexidine with me. I've checked the TSA website and haven't seen anything that suggests that I can't carry it on (in a 3.4 oz or smaller container). Has anyone run into difficulties with carrying it on? I know some have had trouble with hydrogen peroxide contact solution. Just wondering whether chlorhexidine has caused similar issues.
I have taken prescription version on a flight after dental surgery. TSA did not bat an eye. On the way back from Canada, security checked the prescription label on it (because it was larger than 100ml). Otherwise, had no issues.
Perhaps you should check your bag. Then no worries. A 3.4 oz container is just enough for one week anyway.
Thanks, Mary. I have the prescription.
Not asking what you need it for, but can you take chlorhexidine wipes instead?
Good question SQ. I wish I could use the wipes. And since this is only a two night trip I really don't want to check a bag. So I dug around the TSA website some more and found that you can text "Ask TSA" at 275872. After answering a series of phone-tree like questions I was finally prompted to ask my question which I phrased: "I need to bring 3.4 oz. or less of chlorhexidine in my carry on. Is this permitted?" I received the following response: "Bottles of rubbing alcohol must be 3.4 ounces or less when packed in carry-on bags. The bottles must be placed in a single quart-sized zip-top bag with your other travel-sized liquids, gels and aerosols." I'm using chlorhexidine gluconate which contains 11.6% alcohol so it appears from TSA's response that as far as TSA is concerned, chlorhexidine gluconate is diluted isopropyl alcohol.
