Ugh, I wish Virgin Atlantic would specify what their personal item size is. I'm sure one person's interpretation can be quite different from another, but without actual numbers it is just that, an interpretation. It has to fit under the seat. Well, how big can it be and still fit under the seat? Are there numbers for that? I've taken back packs as my personal item that were much bigger than a purse, but still fit under the seat, but maybe that's too big in this case. Who knows?
Sorry, I guess I'm cranky this morning. Anyway, I agree with Carol. This list is helpful for sure, but I'd still check with the airline to be sure (which I should have done BEFORE I booked with VA).
Well, if you use the Lufthansa size you stand a good chance of being safe.
