Carry-on Calculator

After reading Mustlovedogs' thread about standardizing carry-on baggage, I was curious about TAROM, which is a Romanian airline I will be flying later this year. For being such a small airline, they were amazing precise about their requirements. If they are flying a codeshare flight (which they are on my first flight to Bucharest from AMS), then the originating airline's rules apply. If it's a separate flight (like my later flight from Bucharest to Budapest), they list their own requirements.

They also included a handy link to a carry-on calculator, where you can plug in your airline and see what the requirements are. The few that I checked were accurate. Keep in mind, this is for SkyTeam airlines only, which includes Delta, KLM, Air France and about 15 other major airlines. https://www.skyteam.com/en/hand-luggage-policy?type=luggage&airlineList=KL-Y

StarAlliance, which is another one of the 3 major airline alliances, has something similar for its airlines, which includes United. Lufthansa, and about 23 other major airlines: https://www.staralliance.com/en/baggage-information

Unfortunately, OneWorld, which includes American, Alaska and British Airways, does not have a calculator, although many of the individual airlines do.

I always thought that my carry on calculator - after I got rid of my Texas Instruments - was on my phone ;-)

Carry it in my shirt pocket

Texas Instruments! Now THAT is a blast from the past, Nigel. I distinctly remember my first one. So many functions! This math challenged 14 year old HS freshman didn’t know what to do! What was it called? The SR50 or something? I can still see the joy my dad had in his face when he brought it home.

Thanks for the link and info mardee!

Mardee, excellent. But you know many will still stress to the point of not being responsible for ..... you know.

Ha ha ha! Nigel, do you also have a pocket protector in your shirt, lol!?

Mr. E, yes, but this is for the responsible people. ;-)

Dare I tell this group that I used a slide ruler before buying my first TI for my freshman engineering classes in college?

I didn’t dress nerdy, like wearing either with a carrying case on a belt - LOL!

I had a slip stick, too, Jean. My wife used to tell me it was imprecise. She has a math degree and was a computer programmer / analyst.

Hello, Mardee,

Thanks for sharing this useful information!

Nigel,

My first slide rule I got from my dad. Soon after I arrived at college, I got a new one. I also had a circular slide rule; these were pretty uncommon.

Once I purchased my first Hewlett Packard HP-35, that was it for me. I still require a RPN calculator app.

The smartest engineers I ever met used insisted on RPN calculators. I found using the engineers was easier than using any type of calculator.

When I got to college they told us we had to go to the bookstore and buy a Keuffel&Esser Log-Log-Duplex-Decitrig slide rule. (Why on earth is that info still being stored in my head?)

For my first calculator later, at another school, I was too cheap to go TI, so I got one at Radio Shack.

Wish I still had my old K & E slip stick just for old times sake. Amazing the things we discard for the "newest and greatest" when younger, and then wish we had them back decades later.

Two things come to mind immediately TC

Flip phones
Film cameras

I have purchased another of the latter, and have heard the younger set is starting to create a demand for the first.

Thank you, Mardee, for the links. I've copied them. Didn't know such a thing as carry-on calculator existed. At first, I thought it was a post about lithium batteries(?) for calculators that were carried on. . .
As for the slide rule discussion--thanks for the laughs. My husband still has his slide rule and the caramel-colored leather sheath to house it along with a loop to hang from his pants!

TC, oh yes they are! I love it! I actually gave myself an early bday present and bought a turntable and a set of speakers in April. We have a new/used record shop that opened last year near me and I am trying to buy one album a month. It’s so fun looking back at the covers, the lyrics inside, etc. Really takes me back and brings a smile to my face every time I lower that needle!

Adding one comma to the topic subject:

So there was this guy in my squadron who was so good at math, that we called him "Calculator".

One day the colonel came into our barracks . Calculator was the only guy there at the time. He jumped to attention in front of the colonel.

The colonel, knowing him and his nickname, said........

"Carry on, Calculator"

"Carry on, Calculator" sounds like another from the Pinewood Studios stable of family friendly, innuendo-free, stiff upper lip films so popular in the 1960s and '70s....
