Briggs and Riley CX compression

Just curious: Does anyone have the Briggs and Riley CX "one touch" compression bag? (I could have sworn I had asked this before but I cannot find my post). I wonder if it really works. As some of you may know, I always have packing woes. I try and I try to pack less every year. I tell myself I won't buy anything when I'm on vacation. Alas, I give in to temptation.
This past spring I ended up buying another spinner bag. I'm hoping to avoid that experience again!!

So I am curious about the CX...will it help? Is it gimmicky?

I have it.
Yes, it works.

I love this piece of luggage. I think it’s the last carry-on I’ll ever have to buy and I’ve checked it a couple times after I’ve overstuffed it (because if I can’t lift it in the overhead bin, it gets checked( and it’s come through that looking brand new.

Now, if you need another 20 inch bag it’s not like it’s doubling the size of the suitcase. It makes a big difference but…..

I won't make the "I need another 20" bag" mistake again. Things got a little out of hand involving shoes and backpacks!
Thanks for replying. I have a B&R cabin bag spinner that I really love.

Well, I had that international version...my retirement gift to myself that I intended as my forever carry on.
To your query, first- the compression gizmo is a very nice feature. If you don't overfill the bag, you push down both sides and the hard shell edges are flush after zipping. But if overfilled, the edges no longer meet and instead you see/use the fabric expander.
That's no problem if you don't mind checking it.
For me it was the weight that just didn't work. It felt like pushing or dragging a small tank. The suitcase itself weighs 9 and 1/2 pounds empty! If I weighed every item and kept the total weight to the restrictions of KLM, for example, I could just manage to hoist it in the overhead bin. But that's not going to solve your packing situation, unless the imposed restriction keeps you from taking what you want. You should consider if weight is a requirement on the airlines you typically use
The finale was when I checked it, expanded, with purchases on the flight home last summer. It arrived at baggage claim with a massive dent at the top corner and a lot of scuff marks.
I tried a padded hammer on the dent but it only worked somewhat. It no longer looked like a fancy $600 suitcase! Since I don't live near a store customer service said I had to ship it at my expense ( they only pay the return postage)- that's the "lifetime warranty".
If you have a B&R store near you that could make a difference?
I gave it to a women's shelter and now have the international size July.

Wow--that does sound very heavy! Sorry to hear about the damage to your bag. Unfortunately I don't live anywhere near a B&R store. I'll definitely have to give it more thought. Thanks!

Sorry, I don't see anything about these bags to justify what seems to me to be excessive weight and exorbitant price.

Briggs & Riley is an excellent company and stand by their products. Their bags are well made thus the high cost.

But....the bags are heavy. At 8+ pounds, you are already halfway to many airlines' carry on weight limits. Will the weight issue affect your carry on allowance for the airlines you fly? Remember, the more the pack, the more it weighs.

If you just plan to check it, why not save the money and just get a larger bag.

Frank II--a very valid question. A couple of years ago, I bought a TravelPro 25" spinner, figuring I would check it through. However, when I packed it, I found I had trouble maneuvering it down a flight of stairs. I travel solo and have to catch trains and buses on my own. I ended up returning it to the store. Just too unwieldy.

A nearly 10# Carry on will be a bear to haul up stairs and on & off trains & buses when fully packed.

I’ll tell you why I bought it and why I think the weight is worth it. Yes you can buy a 3 pound bag. The problem is there’s some reason it weighs so little. It’s poorly made. Yes these bags weigh more. They will also hold up no matter what. And trust me mine‘s been through a lot. I have coworkers who have used these for years and they look new and they’ve never had a problem. I can’t figure out how a frame got bent on one of them because they’re basically indestructible. Yes you’re paying for that and it weighs more but it’s also not going to be something you’re taking out to the garbage or over to Goodwill in two years because it’s been destroyed.

I’ve seen the same thing with other good brands recommended on here for example, I looked at a Tom Bihn piece of luggage but because it didn’t roll it was too heavy for me, but I can tell it would hold up.

For me B&R was worth it. I realize other people don’t think it is but we all have our decisions.

Now I will say I travel a lot on business and even at 10 pounds I have no problem hoisting it fully packed into the overhead bin on any flight I go on. But I appreciate knowing that if I do have to check it I’m not checking something that the airline can destroy within five minutes. And I’ve seen what they can do to luggage.

Now this post may come down in a couple days because the last time I defended my decision to buy this luggage I got some very hateful comments.

Oh, and by the way B&R is having a black Friday sale. I haven’t checked the prices. No idea if they’re any good or not.
I bought both of my pieces using Amazon warehouse. So they were returns, but they came in the original box still had all the wrapping on the handles, etc. it was a much better deal.

I think I had better hone my packing skills! I'm determined...

This is probably the smartest thing but not necessarily the easiest.

On concept that has helped me is....If I don't take it but find I need it, can I easily find it while traveling? It might cost more than I like, but it is available.

I don't see any Black Friday sales on the B&R site, or on Amazon..where did you find this?

I LOVE my B&R two-wheeled check-in bag, but it is not a spinner, so more difficult to pull through airports when I am carrying a cabin bag and a personal item,.... I'm thinking about buying the same bag in a spinner style....

B&R makes a fantastic bag at a very fair price. I've used mine on so many trips over about 15 years and it still looks almost new.

Carol, thanks for speaking up. I don't know why anyone would say anything hateful to you (especially on this forum. The Facebook group, that's a different story).

So apparently, I got advanced notice of the B&R sale because I bought something from them. (I did buy backpack for my laptop several years ago).

the sale I think officially starts tomorrow according to the email

Now the Amazon trick is harder, you just have to keep checking and when you click on the luggage on Amazon, a lot of times it will show you you can buy for cheaper and that’s how I found mine. But it’s not every piece every time.

Just because bag is heavy, doesn't mean it's well made. In fact, a lot of heavy bags are not well made, they're just heavy.

In fact, I generally use lightweight bags because I carry it on myself and can control how it is treated. It's only those who check an overweight bag who have to worry about how the baggage gorillas will treat it. I've used my 2½# bag for over 20 trips, international and domestic, always carried it on, and never had a problem. It's stood up fine.

In my previous life, I reviewed some B & R bags. They are some of the best made bags on the market. They're heavy because of the quality of the material.

Considering the price, the quality has to be good. They will last. If there is a problem, the company stands behind them.

The target audience for B & R bags are frequent business travelers. They are people who need quality, reliable bags and aren't afraid to spend the money to get them. (It's also a bit of a status symbol.)

Addendum....since writing this, every ad I see on other websites is for Briggs & Riley.

Frank II--I'm being flooded with B&R ads too.
I'm very happy with the Baseline Cabin Spinner I bought last year. Found it on eBay--the seller's mother had used it once and then never again. It is definitely a quality product!

Carol I'm sending along a big thank you!! I just ordered the medium spinner B&R bag with a big discount, and a FREE small sling bag comes with it on the Black Friday special!! This size comes only in grey but I would have ordered that color anyway so I'm very happy!!

Now, what to do with my older B&R bag??? I'll see if my partner wants it. Doubtful, though!!
