Bagsmart expandable personal item review

I had been looking for a new personal item that could expand the main compartment, and found this Bagsmart item: Bagsmart foldable travel bag

In particular I wanted one that expanded the main compartment, not one that added a separate compartment to the bottom. This bag also had the non-negotiable trolley strap.

I think Bagsmart’s measurements of 17.7” long, 7.8” wide, 13” tall and 24L are pretty accurate. Expanded it’s almost 24” tall and a very large 37L.

My plan is to use it as a 24L personal item along with a rollaboard, but if my roller gets gate-checked I can pull a packing cube of essentials out of the roller and add it to the expanded personal item.

The bag comes with a basic crossbody strap, no shoulder cushion. I might bring a different strap if I thought I’d be using it that way. The handles are big enough to carry over my shoulder.

Full price $30, but it goes on sale (I paid $20). The material does seem to be water resistant, as advertised. There are 2 un-branded zippers for the main closure that worked well. The plastic hardware to attach the strap is . . . plastic – I suppose that could be a longevity weak spot.

Inside there’s just one 8” x 8” hanging pocket. Outside there’s a 1-zipper pocket (9” x 7” x 1.5”) that the whole bag folds into for compact storage.

This bag did a great job on my recent trip – 24L on the plane, used the whole 37L during the trip, then shrunk it back to 24L for the return flight. I think it will be coming with me on a lot of trips!

Oh, a new bag to look at! I have not seen this one, Kirstin, but color me interested! Have you unfolded it and then folded it up again? I just wondered how easy the process was. Some bags are just ridiculously hard; in fact, I have one bag that I've never been able to figure out how to fold it back up again.

I'm actually looking for a packable bag to take with me to my Iceland and Scandinavia trip, so I will have to check this out. Thank you so much for the review! Have you

Hi Mardee, I have folded it back up into its pocket — it was very easy.

I like to have more internal organization, but then it wouldn’t be so lightweight and foldable. My solution is to put my day bag, which is coming on my trip anyway, into the Bagsmart to provide the pen slots and pockets I want. This bag stays at the hotel during the day and I wander around with my day bag.

I should have mentioned: I weigh it at 15 oz empty (no shoulder strap) and 17.5 oz with the provided shoulder strap.

I also should have mentioned there is an external pocket at each end — I probably forgot because I didn’t find them useful. The are flat slit pockets the width of the bag — too open and floppy for a water bottle. I’m not sure how to make good use of them.

It comes in many colors, so I think the question here is . . . Can you stop at only one?? 😂

Hey Kristin, so when the bag is folded into itself, its about 1.5 inches thick?

Hi Jules, I just did it to check — a quick fold up, maybe not the most careful effort, and it was about 3” thick due to bulging. It was probably 1.5” when it arrived from Bagsmart, super-neatly folded.

Oh yea! Another bag-enabler, lol. Thanks for coming back with the weight!

I used an old Kipling bad my last trip and did what you plan…used my purse to give it some organization. That worked great.

I am not a fan of tote style bags for traveling. But I do like Bagsmart products. I have a couple backpacks and a gym bag.
