Looking for a third party airtag that works with my Apple IOS. I hate the Apple Airtag. So I'm looking for one that will work the same way.
I’m pretty sure that’s a proprietary program and so you might be able to find something that works using an app you downloaded but it would not work with the Find My app
Tile has an app they say works on iPhones
There are actually quite a few third party devices out there that work with the "Find Me" network. They are labeled as such. For example there exist luggage locks with find me. And example is the Mili Milock.
There are also cheaper tags that work with Find Me, but do not have all the features of Apple's tags. For some use scenarios (eg. theft preventione) they are even better. Chipolo for example sells tags that are compatible.
Easy. Pebblebee. Check them out.
Better than Apple's Airtags. Way, way better.
How are they better?
- Works with Apple's "Find My" app (also works with Android "Find My Device")
- Often cheaper (prices vary by seller, there are periodic discounts if you are patient and watch for specials on their website and Amazon - also true for Apple's Airtags)
- RECHARGABLE. They claim a single charge is good for a full year. We charge ours (we have 4) before each trip.
- You don't need to buy something extra to connect it to your stuff; their tracker (Pebblebee "Clip") comes with an integrated clip, which works perfectly for us.
- Louder than AirTags (in my experience).
- Slightly greater range than AirTags (alleged, no personal testing).
- They have 3 different models, depending on your needs. I think the "Clip" model makes the most sense for most applications, but they also have a flat, credit-card shaped model if you are prone to losing your wallet (probably not helpful if your wallet is stolen but if left somewhere, sure). They also have a model without the clip, I'm not sure what benefits it provides.
We love our Pebblebee Clips (I'm quite bought-in to Apple's ecosystem, but I think Apple gets a lot of things wrong in recent years, their Airtag design is one of them).
Worth a look if you want equivalent functionality but without the Apple hubris. Cheers.
DavidfromSeattle: thank you for the tip about the Pebblebee products! I just ordered a 2-pack for our upcoming France My Way Tour.
And they're a local company, too (developed in Seattle, looks like they may now have moved to Renton, still a local business).
That's a win-win in my book!
