AirTag success story

We are in Greenland right now. We flew SEA to KEF to JAV. My husbands bag made it to KEF, but not to JAV. They held several people’s bags as the plane was small and it was at capacity for weight. That was last Saturday morning. We figured it would arrive the next day, but there were no flights to here on Sunday. So long story short there were numerous emails back and forth with the airline. They said they would not send it and to just wait until we arrive there Friday night.

All of our bags have AirTags in them.

Out of curiosity, just yesterday my husband looked to see where the AirTag said it was. It was here in Ilulissat! The airline here does not deliver bags to you even though it was their doing.

So we took a taxi to the airport to retrieve it. The person helping my husband kept insisting it wasn’t there etc but my husband was just as insistent and had the man follow him with the app. Yes, that is the only way they found the bag.

We had all of my husbands cold weather clothing in there along with some of mine. I am pretty sure that the pants he has been wearing for 6 days will not get worn for quite some time lol.

Anyway, just wanted to share a real story and how the AirTag saved the day!

Yay, that's very good news! I love AirTags, and this story just reinforces that!

Enjoy Greenland!!! I can't wait for a trip report (hint, hint)! :-)

Nice job being persistent and reconnecting to your bags but I am curious to your comment above. I would assume EU regulations and/or the airline’s contract of carriage would be required to bring your bag to you or at least compensate you for your taxi fare. Regardless, have fun!

Every now and again AirTags get mixed up. When I left San Jose airport, my one AirTag insisted that one wine suitcase was NOT on the plane. When I arrived in San Diego, the message was the same. So I was already talking to the Lost Baggage staff, who said AirTags are rarely wrong, when lo and behold, both wine suitcases came rolling out on the conveyer belt together! Just a lesson to me not to jump to conclusions too quickly!
Thanks for sharing your story!

Jay—I questioned the delivery as well but our apt host as well as guide both told me they will not deliver. So we are definitely claiming taxi fare. Things are just very different here. Like when you land you literally walk off the plane and get your luggage from one teensy tiny conveyor belt and then walk out. It is as low key as it gets.

My partner and I put Airtags in our luggage and flew on the same plane. As we looked at the bags approaching us on the conveyor belt, one said hey your bag is right here and the other showed as still sitting on the departure runway. Oh well.

I’ve learned to pay attention to the time along with the location before I panic. Most times when I arrive, the airtag will show my departure location along with something like “8 hours ago”. I’m always happy when the location suddenly updates to the arrival airport or “near you”.

mikliz97 - glad the tag helped you get your luggage back.

Laura— yes that time stamp is what matters.

We were out on a boat trip last night until almost 1am and were very happy to have our fleece lined waterproof pants! Mine were in his bag. Best of all, my husbands razor was in it do he finally shaved. He looks much better without a beard;)

Sorry, everyone looks better with a beard. Scientific fact :)

AirTags (and their non-Apple clones, which I prefer) are good, sometimes great, and can be useful. But its not magic, and it depends on multiple factors, including: how near they are to somebody else's iPhones, wifi routers, and more seemingly random bits of technology that may or may not walk by. So we need to calibrate our expectations. They will never be 100% accurate 100% of the time (heck, who is, besides the Pope?) so we accept they're prone to some randomness. That said, yes, they can be very reassuring and sometimes helpful.

My spouse recently had a bag separated from her in LHR, we flew on to Shetland, her bag only followed us 3 days later. We kept telling airline staff where it was. They seemed uninterested. My sense is that some airport staff do not appreciate "help" from the owners of lost luggage and don't want to be told where an AirTag in a missing bag says it is (or was, last time there was a ping). Maybe we just got lucky with grumpy staff.

I now have AirTags in all my bags and will be testing them out for the first time on a trip next month. Hopefully they perform as expected.

phred —lol;)

With the AirTags, On our fights back to Iceland and then again up to Akureyri we could see that our bags were loaded onto the planes. Nothing is 100% of course, but these proved to be valuable for us.

David you are right, you can find Internet stories of people showing the whereabouts of the bag in the terminal and no one can be bothered.

Also stories of people showing the cops where their stolen goods are and no one cares.
