The trip itself
26 days
2 travel days
2 days in Edinburgh
18 day Windstar cruise around Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland, ending in Rouen
4 days in Normandy coast and transport to airport
The weather forecasts right before we left showed high 50’s and low 60’s with winds bringing the feel down by 5-10 degrees in Scotland, to low and mid 60’s in Ireland to high 70’s in France. However, with a trip of this duration, the reality is it’s hard to predict. Rain was projected on many days.
I flew Air France to Scotland so knew I could not pack carryon only. But I also knew I didn’t want to manage a 24” or 25” suitcase. I’m short and I find them hard to manage (pulling on wheels or using 4 wheels across carpet, for example)
I packed my US sized carryon (a Travelpro) and a small personal item (16x12x6). Both bags were full but not at a maximum level)
Then I repacked and put many clothes and essentials into my Hynes 19” soft backpack which I carried on with my personal item and checked my roller with the remaining items. So when I arrived I could transfer most items back to my suitcase and use my backpack to bring home stuff (want to buy a sweater or two in Ireland and/or Scotland).
Clothes I packed (and wore on travel days)
5 slacks (2 Eileen Fisher waffle pants in charcoal and brown…they’re kind of straight leg textured pants. 1 Old Navy pixie pants in rust. 1 Athleta Brooklyn in tan. 1 Chico black pants (very much like the Athleta pants but styled differently)
10 tops (5 long sleeve, 2 short sleeve & 3 sleeveless. I’m not a solid top person, but all of these patterns matched at least 3 bottoms and some matched 4 or 5. So easy to mix and match.
7 underwear and socks
3 bras
Nightgown
Swimsuit
Coverup (a Chill River dress I could also use if the weather was really hot in France)
Bike shorts (to wear under dress)
2 lightweight cardigan sweaters
1 cardigan sweatshirt
1 raincoat
1 puffer jacket
Cold weather items: a performance wear top as an under layer, 2 pairs of “tights” to wear under the lightweight pants, fingerless magic gloves and a pashmina.
3 shoes (I waterproof Skechers sneaker, 1 slip on Skecher, 1 lightweight flats)
3 bras (1 bralette)
8 varied socks (some ankle, no show and a couple crew style)
7 underwear
I know this is way more than most people pack and honestly, it's more than I usually pack. But for whatever reason, I was feeling a lot of anxiety about packing for this trip and I must have made my list, packed a trial run and then changed my mind at least 5 or 6 times.
I'll put my summary of what worked and what didn't in the response.
