26 days in Italy - packing and laundry thoughts

I’m back from a great trip to Italy. I went to Bologna for 3 nights, Padua for 2 nights and then started the RS Village Italy tour. After that finished I went to Milan for 6 more nights.

I’ve been traveling more in recent years, doing the Covid catch up and mindful of working on my bucket list now while I still can. I’m gratefully hale and hearty but turn 75 next month, so I’m starting to feel the ticking clock. At this point my packing is pretty much routine. Always carry on, always a total of 3 pair of pants, 4 tops, 4 undies, 2 bras, 1 thigh length thin thermal bottom, 4 pairs of socks, 1 sleep shirt, and 1 sleep crop bottom. Because I run cold I always wear another layer, so this trip I had 2 merino cardigans. Also I had 4 scarves to brighten up my very boring wardrobe.

I wore Ariat leather boots on the plane and packed a pair of Saucony sneaks. I have an almost knee length raincoat with a hood and a removable liner. I wore it with the liner in for the first 2 weeks but then removed it when it was reliably in the upper 60s to 70 in the afternoon.

My bag weighed 17-18 lbs. I think my personal item was under 5 lbs but I don’t see it in my notes. I’ve converted to a smaller purse and personal item and 3 trips in, I’m still very happy with my choices there.

I wash my undies every time I shower and do my tops as needed in the sink. I had 1 T, 1 lightweight turtleneck, 2 button long sleeve no iron cotton shirts. The cotton button shirts dry really fast, the T and turtleneck can take 24 hours but very doable for 2 night stays in the same hotel.

I bought some Forever New granular laundry detergent after reading about it here on the forum and poured maybe an ounce of it into a small travel bottle. I would use it or shower gel for sink wash. But I am very happy with it now after I somehow got black grease on the sleeve of my coat. I thought, uh oh. I tried a quick clean without much success but then doubled up on the powder and used my small nail brush and really scrubbed it and it worked. Stain gone.

The lighter I travel the better I like it and I wish I could get my carry on weight down even more. I think I’ve reached my limit. I read what Jean and Jane can do and I’m very envious but for the life of me I can’t figure what else to jettison. They are the true light packing queens. I have minimal just in case meds in a ziplock, small emergency sewing kit, 2 folding hangers and also a bag of teabags and a coil cup heater but I’d sooner leave out the meds than the tea bags!

Happy for any questions or comments…..

Lyndash, thanks for posting your packing plan & results! I am always interested in what people bring that helps them. Right now I am in Italy, and I am giving myself permission to buy something fun when I get to Bari in a week - a new scarf or stylish top. I purposely just brought two tops & a 32 degree layer shirt, plus two dresses. I tend to gravitate to similar top styles & color patterns, so it’s time for something different. : )

I wore my 32 degree as a top with my rain jacket for the flight, but it’s good you bring cardigans if you are colder. The KLM flight was cold heading to Rome. You were smart to bring items you need; packing light still means “packing right”. ; )

You bring tea bags; I bring coffee sticks - our essentials-LOL!

Are you also posting a trip report? I would love to hear what you did in Milan.

"but I’d sooner leave out the meds than the tea bags!"

Lynda, so funny!

To me, any carry on bag that is less than 20# is doing well! I got down to 16# on a trip to Italy but I did not pack a 2nd pair of workable shoes. The ones I brought were flats that I wound up not being able to walk in for more than a block or so, so that was a waste. Back to the 2nd pair of athletic shoes.

I'm glad the Forever New got your grease stain out!

I hope you enjoyed the VI tour!

Wow, that sounds like a great pared-down packing job! I can see needing the layers for spring travel temps and rain potential.

I like a carryon and a (school sized) floral backpack, but it’s hard for me to pick my day bag situation, that must also go into the school sized backpack for flights:
Either a little sports-sac brand 3-zip crossbody paired with very small backpack for umbrella, water bottle, hat: or a hobo baggalini crossover.
I find that I juggle my things amongst the bags too often during the trip. My goal is to get this down to a science, with everything in its place. What do you use for a day bag?

The travel detergent is a good idea. Would you say it’s fragrance-free?

I’m curious about your time in Bologna, as I’d like to add it, and perhaps Turin, onto my next tour.

Ciao!

I love the "what I packed" posts. I'm constantly reassessing my choices and trying to get the weight and size down while still feeling fresh, clean and even a little pretty while I travel. I just got back from a month in Portugal. On this trip I finally accepted that my purse situation has never quite worked. When I first started seriously traveling, I got a small Travelon bag. Then I got a bigger one because the small one didn't hold a water bottle and I've always been a big water drinker, plus I felt like I needed to bring lots of things on a day out "just in case". Then I finally had to admit that these "anti pickpocket" purses just weigh too much and I felt like a packhorse, so I switched to a cross body that hugged my body and held the true essentials, but that one had zipper pulls that jingled when I walk, so that drove me crazy. I ended up purchasing a light weight cross body in a little thrift store in Leiria that worked for the rest of my trip. It has a pocket on the back side that was perfect for my passport and an inside pocket for my credit cards. Unfortunately, it's just ugly, so I'm on the search for another travel purse before my next big trip in the fall.

I got some lightweight slacks at Columbia based on a recommendation here. They pack up tiny and dry overnight, but they clung to my legs in a sticky feeling way on warm days, so I purchased a pair of linen pants to supplement my wardrobe in I don't even remember what city. I like them, but they did take longer to dry. I wasn't super happy with my shirt choices either and ended up buying a few shirts along the way as well. My panties, bras and socks as well as my pajama choices are okay, so that's one positive.

Apparently my travel wardrobe is still a work in progress, so I'll continue to read these posts and get ideas and buy things, then buy more things until I get it right. I really do think layering lightweight items is key. It gives you more individual choices without adding so much bulk and weight, but I still haven't perfected this. Thanks for posting this and keep the ideas coming ladies!

Shawn and KRS, I carry a briefcase type bag as my personal item on the plane. It’s roughly 14” x 10” x 4” in size and weighs about 12 ounces. It has a crossbody strap on it and is very easy to carry. I have my chargers and mini iPad, 4 pill bottles of prescription meds, emergency stash of Oreos, AirPods, travel toothpaste and brush and 16 oz water bottle. It has some zip compartments for some paperwork, travel journal and pens. It will also hold my purse if needed.

I used to carry a med to large travel purse but I’ve reduced that over the years as well. Especially now that I download the travel books I used to carry physical copies of; I used to feel like a packhorse by the end of the day with all the weight. And those anti theft metal in the straps purses are the worst. I do travel as early in the spring and as late in the fall as possible for RS tours and for solo trips I go in the winter so I don’t feel the need for a water bottle in my purse anymore. I’m never a tourist when it’s warm or hot any longer. On a RS tour if we are out on the bus I do leave a water bottle on the bus sometimes.

My purse is a Tom Bihn Side Effect. It’s very light, only 6 ounces, and small and I really like it. It holds tissues, gum, fold up shopping bag, credit card and a charger for my phone which is about the size of very chunky tube of lipstick. It’s also just big enough to hold my travel journal and pen if it’s a day where I’ll be eating in a sit down restaurant or sitting somewhere I think I’ll feel the need to write. That’s sort of a solo traveler kind of thing I think.

The Village Italy tour I was just on there were a few of us with very small bags, one had a lululemon bag even smaller than mine. But most wore backpacks. Everyone needs to do their own thing.

The Forever New laundry soap is scent free I’m pretty sure. I just used it for my 2 merino cardigans on delicate cycle and it did a great job. It is marketed for delicate fabrics.

I’m almost finished wading through my pictures and I’ll do a short trip report soon. I saw so many great things in Italy I’m still trying to process it. I did enjoy Bologna and felt it was definitely worth a stop, Shawn. A lot of college town energy and I walked everywhere.

Lyndash, what a great packing report! I think you did extremely well. I'll have to remember that laundry detergent. Right now I'm using laundry detergent pods that I got through my Medigap plan (I get $50 worth of OTC stuff every 3 months and they have laundry soap pods in there, lol!). But I'm always worried they will get a hole or something and leak out. I do keep them in a small ziplock, but you never know.

I wish I was a scarf person, and I used to bring scarfs with me as I have some nice ones. But I wind up never wearing them, so I finally gave up. But I always love the look of them.

Lyndash, thanks for the great report. I've gotten my carry-on down to 17 pounds when I leave home. But, it always weighs more on the way back due to my "souvenir" food shopping. Because of weight and liquid allowance, I check it on the return. My priority now is to reduce the weight of my personal item.

Thanks Lyndash, great packing report and lots to think about. Do you happen to know the brand of your phone charger that's only the size of very chunky tube of lipstick? I was not happy with my new power block on this last trip.

Sandancisco, my charger is an Anker Nano Power Bank. 5000mAh. It’s for my iPhone 12 so it’s a lightening connector but they make the same thing for the usb c connection of newer models. I got it after seeing it recommended by someone on the forum. I just finished my 4th trip with it and I’m still very pleased. I’m very phone dependent and use it for maps, pictures and looking up informational material online when touring churches and other sites during my day out. Running out of charge would be a catastrophe for me. I got it on Amazon and it’s about $30.
