we heard capri is beautiful, blue grotto and a restaurant at the top, however it appears ferries from salerno only start in april; we are going in march. suggestions?

Ferries only run to Capri from Salerno from April though October.

You'd need to travel to either Naples or Sorrento to catch a boat to Capri in March as it's off-season for the island and much of the coast.
If there's anything that might fall under the definition of a tourist trap on Capri, it's the Blue Grotto. Ability to enter the cavern is dependent on weather/sea activity so I wouldn't put it on the must-do list.
